Volume won't adjust on Built-In Audio

Postby bsder » 2019-08-25 23:43

I've got an odd problem. The volume control only seems to adjust between max and off for my laptop built-in speakers.

This is odd because if I install a Bluetooth audio device and select it my volume controls work fine. If I plug in my HDMI monitor and select the HDMI/DisplayPort audio, my volume controls work fine.

Why on earth would the Built-in Audio fail to control volume but still be able to mute it?

My laptop is a Lenovo Carbon X1 7th Gen. It's configure to dual boot Debian and Windows 10, so built-in speakers are verified to work.

Install is Debian 10 (4.19.0-5-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.19.37-5+deb10u2 (2019-08-08) x86_64 GNU/Linux) with Gnome 3.30.2.

dmesg for audio hardware:

Anybody have any ideas how I can even start to run this down?

Thanks.

And of course I find the answer after posting. Sigh.

From here for future reference: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Lenovo_ThinkPad_X1_Carbon_(Gen_7)

Volume Controls

In order for volume controls to work correctly you must edit /usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths/analog-output.conf.common by adding the following above [Element PCM]:

[Element Master]
switch = mute
volume = ignore
