Constantly crashing Chromium cured?

Postby stevepusser » 2020-01-11 20:48

Chromium 79.0.3945.79-1 has been stuck in Sid for a month now, and for good reason: it crashes quite often.

However, I've done rebuilds after applying Takahide Nojima's fixes from that thread, and the Buster version is now quite stable, and va-api video playback still works. :D Builds for Buster, testing, and unstable are here, though you'll have to pin my build in Sid, since it's seen as lower than the Debian one.

I'm not about to ask for a refund but I've had more problems with chromium than any other Debian package - it's the main reason I switched to Firefox. I understand most maintainers donate their time but I really do think chromium needs a little more testing before being released to Unstable.
we see things not as they are, but as we are.

Hopefully, those fixes land in the standard build for Buster. The only gripe I have with Stable and indeed Debian in general is Chromium. But I heard the Chromium team is understaffed, to say the least.

Well, yes, the buggy version has been stuck in Sid for over a month, so I went ahead and changed up the source tarball, patches, control, copyright, and rules files per the last entries of the bug report, and the crashes are gone.

Debian pushed 79.0.3945.130-1~deb10u1 to Buster as a security update, but removed the va-api feature. Since va-api works fine for me, I have direct backports of that Sid version with va-api in the OBS repo now.
