XFCE + Plasma on same machine: risky?

Postby ChameleonScales » 2020-05-21 06:36

Has anyone tried installing both XFCE and Plasma on Buster? Are there any conflicts?
I would like to do it but this is my work machine so I can't take too much risk.

I have xfce, lxde, fluxbox and openbox on buster, no issues. So I don't suppose you will encounter any issues except plasma will bring in a ton of qt dependencies and xfce will download gtk dependencies. You might see duplication of apps as in multiple text editors and such.

Ok but Plasma is quite different to those DEs you mentioned. I'd prefer to have a response from someone who has tried that particular combination if possible.

I tried KDE and XFCE several years ago, and it worked fine back then, but cluttered my menus. :) It can be fixed, though.

If you install plasma with the # tasksel command, it is easier to remove it again if you're unhappy.

Thanks! I didn't know about tasksel. That's a very handy tool.
For now actually installed Dolphin alone because I prefer XFCE for all the rest but if that's not enough I'll definitely try the tasksel installation.
