[SOLVEDD]Xfce:prevent desktop icons' automatic rearranging?

Postby debcub » 2020-07-20 09:22
ED
Hi,

I am learning to use Debian Buster Xfce (coming from Gnome). Each time I start a session on my NB again, the icons on my desktop have automatically arranged themselves stubbornly in an unwanted order. Even if I check "save session on logout". What gets me is that a second user on this system has desktop icons that stay where he put it. Strange, I created this second user myself, and I don't remember that I did anything special in his session settings :?:

What could be wrong, and how to fix it, please?

Thanks, debcub

Yeah, this is an old bug resulting from logic races at session startup in XFCE.
Here You will find few workarounds for this problem:

Xfce:how to prevent desktop icons' auto rearranging?

Postby debcub » 2020-07-20 14:50

Thank you, I had tried the chattr solution already, didn't work for me. But the following worked, do not ask me why this is the solution:

I placed a firefox launcher in the top left corner  - as I had done with user2. And, oh wonder, all my other desktop icons stay put now, too, wherever I place them :D

This solution did not survive the next reboot :( I am trying something else and will report back in a few days or so.

P.S. User2 (s.a.) is still fine with his desktop icons.

I prefer the method with locking/unlocking the icons -> it works independently of the panel sizes/launcher locations ;)

... shall we then say that the problem is solved?

Jeesh, how often do you have to do a reboot? Can't you suspend and/or hibernate instead? (yes I know some machines have trouble with suspending or resuming) I've had uptimes of weeks on a laptop.

I had thought of that, but where the heck do I find it in Debian Buster Xfce, please?

Just open the desktop launcher file with Your favorite text editor and add the line:
Code: Select all
LockStatus=Locked
;)
This works in 99% of cases - but if You want a solution that works for 100% of cases, then the only way I know of is to restore desktop config on each login - a solution from posts #1 and #8

Well, in case someone else has this problem, and does not give up so easy, just when the solutions are so easy ,

A little search foo, and this is answered here: https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=7597&p=2
Code: Select all
/home/xxx/Desktop/IconLockSet.desktop

Use the keywords:
Code: Select all
For XFCE,  the method with locking/unlocking the icons

copy/paste into search engine.

I fooed around a lot with Google (see my 2nd post 07-20 14:50), e.g., "chattr" was a foo, I am not a foo fighter, so I quit Xfce because it is too foofoo for my humble mind ;)

Ahh, ok, I understand, So, what next now ?

... shall we then say that the problem is solved?

I would say it is solved, so hopefully even though the OP does not like the solutions offered, they should/could edit the subject line in their first post, add the word "solved",..
Thanks
