In last version,
ERROR: Unable to extract JS player URL; please report this issue on https://yt-dl.org/bug . Make sure you are using the latest version; see https://yt-dl.org/update on how to update. Be sure to call youtube-dl with the --verbose flag and include its complete output.

Do you know when this is gonna be fixed...

It's my impression that the problem is not with Youtube-dl. Youtube wants greater control and is making changes to block download software. Has youtube-dlc found a way around Youtube blocks?

@bester69 You must have missed the news that RIAA ordered it to be taken down with a dodgy DMCA order.

You can update and use youtube.dl, but its not working properly thought you can download videos and stream them down yet. :?

Just now, I installed the older version from the Stable repos. That version didn't work for me. Ran the following and got a working youtube-dl:

Code: Select all
$ sudo apt purge youtube-dl
$ sudo wget https://yt-dl.org/latest/youtube-dl -O /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl
$ sudo chmod a+x /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl
$ hash -r

Tested it using youtube-dl --extract-audio --audio-format vorbis [url]. Playing the audio of the song I downloaded right now. For those who like jazz, "Moments Notice" by McCoy Tyner (live)

@MALsPa,

Please don't post youtube links in combination with youtube-dl.
Otherwise this forum is going to be DMCA'd too :(

If you look at the changelog of the last Debian upstream or backports version, you can see they also got the source after it was taken down on github.

* New upstream version 2020.09.20.
+ More carefully imported than general, since the upstream repository
(and my fork of it, BTW) were taken down. The signature of the
original tarball failed to verify said tarball and this required more
attention/auditing than usual to import the changes to protect our
fellow Debian users (I'm also a user after all!).

I was under the impression the this forum was hosted in Europe (Netherlands) and outwith the jurisdiction of any US court and the DMCA? Whilst I know there are agreements between countries on such things the Netherlands is one of the less likely countries to comply willy nilly.

If the forum is hosted in Europe we should untwist our knickers and stick the links back up I say.

Debian is at far more risk to a take down notice being based in the "Land of the free". Firefox and Chrome can perform the same functions as yt-dl if you use the built in dev tools. (Google gives it's self a take down notice.) Like I can really see distros removing firefox and chrome.

The DMCA has poked a wasps nest with this one and it's going to get stung.

I fully agree with you, except about the comparison between a browser and youtube-dl.
Remember that youtube-dl has specific code to handle youtube downloads, which neither firefox nor chrome have.

In any case, posting a random youtube link for a random song with no actual reason is, IMHO, just asking for unnecessary trouble (you can imagine bots searching for youtube links in combination with "youtube-dl" nearby).

If there was a good reason to post a specific link, rather than just as a random unnecessary example, then yes, I'll be all for sticking to our guns (*not* in the american sense FFS!) and defending our european rights.

I didn't notice you ever went away. :mrgreen:

It's refreshing to see how Github supported the developers in this and future occurrences of DMCA takedown requests, and have even established a legal defence fund:

Anybody who uses youtube-dl should probably donate some money to the EFF to help pay for their lawyer.
