AMD Radeon 520 2GB GDDR5 dedicated GPU not recognized

Postby paulclark » 2020-12-26 20:37

Dear All,

I have a ThinkCentre M75s-1 with 8-Core AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 3700 and it has the following dedicated graphics card with 2 Display ports.

AMD Radeon 520 2GB GDDR5 - this GPU is not part of the CPU. It is standalone PCI card and the CPU does not have any integrated GPU.

inxi -Fxz is giving me the following output for Graphics card and it is not working very well with dual monitor 4K60Hz, lots of horizontal white lines, you can not look at it after a few minutes.

Graphics: Device-1: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Oland [Radeon HD 8570 / R7 240/340 OEM] vendor: Bitland Information
driver: radeon v: kernel bus ID: 0d:00.0
Display: wayland server: X.Org 1.20.4 driver: ati,vesa unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,radeon
resolution: 3840x2160~60Hz, 3840x2160~30Hz
OpenGL: renderer: AMD OLAND (DRM 2.50.0 4.19.0-13-amd64 LLVM 7.0.1) v: 4.5 Mesa 18.3.6 direct render: Yes

lshw -C video is giving the following output.

*-display
description: VGA compatible controller
product: Oland [Radeon HD 8570 / R7 240/340 OEM]
vendor: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI]
physical id: 0
bus info: pci@0000:0d:00.0
version: 87
width: 64 bits
clock: 33MHz

resources: irq:64 memory:e0000000-efffffff memory:fce00000-fce3ffff ioport:e000(size=256) memory:fce40000-fce5ffff

any idea how can I get the AMD Radeon 520 into play?

Many thanks in advance,
Paul

Your Debian installation is probably missing non-free firmware needed by your video display adapter.

You, more than likely need to install the firmware-amd-grahics package. (Assuming you are using Debian Buster).

You may need to modify the Debian /etc/apt/sources.list file in order to install non-free software. (Debian doesn't configure to install non-free software by default.)

hello RU55EL,

many thanks for your update and having a look at this.

lsb_release -d
Description: Debian GNU/Linux 10 (buster)

cat /etc/apt/sources.list | grep non
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian stable main contrib non-free

sudo apt-get install firmware-amd-graphics
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
firmware-amd-graphics is already the newest version (20190114-2).

Looks like you have already install ed the needed firmware.

Did you only get one line from sourceslist grep non?
Sources.list should be configured to show three lines. (I have buster rather than stable, but that shouldn't really matter,)
Code: Select all
russel@NUC-FR:~$ cat /etc/apt/sources.list | grep non
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security buster/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster-updates main contrib non-free

Useless use of cat:
Code: Select all
grep non /etc/apt/sources.list

paulclark wrote:

driver: radeon

The card should be using the amdgpu driver so try adding these kernel command line parameters:
Code: Select all
radeon.cik_support=0 amdgpu.cik_support=1

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AM ... parameters

If that doesn't work then post your dmesg output (be sure to use code tags, it will be quite long; or upload it to a pastebin and share the link).

Also note that your third generation Ryzen CPU might not be fully supported by Debian buster's stock kernel so perhaps consider the version from the buster-backports repository instead (see my [FAQ] guide in the HowTo section for details).

Try
Code: Select all
# tee -a /etc/initramfs-tools/modules <<<'amdgpu'
# update-initramfs -u -k all

^ That should add the amdgpu kernel module to the initramfs and force an early KMS start. Hopefully.

And just to be sure: this isn't an R520 card from 2005? Are you sure it's a 520 card from 2017?

I don't trust inxi or lshw so double-check the vendor ID and product ID:
Code: Select all
# update-pciids
lspci -knn | grep -iA3 'vga\|3d\|video'

The # symbol indicates that you should run the commands as root.

Here the paste-bin for the commands and many thanks

It is the card on the top at this link below, the original card which comes with the Ryzen 7 pro sff PC, I have not changed it.

Check if the amdgpu module has been added to the initramfs:
Code: Select all
for i in /boot/initrd.img* ; do lsinitramfs $i | grep amdgpu ; done

And also check for any blocks on the amdgpu kernel module:
Code: Select all
grep -R 'blacklist.*amd.*' /{etc,usr/lib}/modprobe.d

Been doing some digging and it looks like your card is an ancient re-branded GCN 1.0 type, which should indeed be using the radeon kernel module so you already have it configured correctly. Sorry for the needless run-around but AMD's versions confuse the shit out of me

For your display issues perhaps try https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AT ... _using_EXA

hello Head_on_a_Stick,

many thanks for all your feedback, I think it is a great opportunity to learn additional debian skills. Your help is much appreciated, alone the syntax you use.

I have 2 items which I would be happy to have your opinion.

You pointed out that the Ryzen 7 3700 https://www.amd.com/en/products/cpu/amd-ryzen-7-pro-3700 might not be fully compatible with the latest debian available. How would I understand or find out this is the case? What should I look for?

The other thing I would like to ask is about a suitable graphics card. Would you recommend to invest £ on non-AMD platforms? Any graphics card that you would say, yes this works without any issues higher refresh rates and higher resolutions (4k60Hz) ?

To be honest with you, I believe it is never the same experience whatever you do with vmware cycle dual screens compared to running your own installation as debian.

Check dmesg and the systemd journal for any errors or warnings. You can try the backported kernel and see if it makes any difference. I really don't know how good support is under the stock kernel, I run 2nd generation Ryzen myself but some users have reported that the 4.19 kernel does work with 3rd generation.

paulclark wrote:Would you recommend to invest £ on non-AMD platforms?

Not really, no. AMD contribute directly to the open source drivers and my iGPU performs better under Debian than it does in Windows 10. Even the newer 5700XT cards should be supported with the backported kernel & firmware and the Debian 11 release is due in the next six months or so.

Having said that I've never actually owned a discrete GPU so I can't offer any direct advice, you're probably better off just doing some directed research with a decent search engine. If you wait a bit somebody with more GPU experience than myself might offer some suggestions.
