Hi, im having a problem with a new installation of debian, the screen is automatically on 800x600 but when i change the resolution to 1024x768 in Gnome i get a weird double screen and a strange mouse pointer.
I have tried to re-run dpkg-reconfigure XF86Config but when there is an option to select 1024x768 using" [*] 1024x768" this i am unable to put a * in the "[]" box, how do i do this. Or is there a problem with drivers or something usin ATi mobiltiy redeon 9700.
(it works with at 1024x768 with XP)
any light on the subject would be appreciated.

I just solved my ati mobility radeon 9000 problem (same resolution)
Here's what I did:
add these to /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://www.linex.org/sources/linex/debian sarge linex
deb http://www.linex.org/sources/linex/debian woody linex
install these two packages
fglrx-4.3.0-driver and fglrx-4.3.0-control-qt3 (these are ati specific drivers)
run dpkg-reconf. choose the ati chipset when it asks, and when it asks you to add or remove the resolutions from the list - remove 800 -600 and 640 - 480
(oh, and I selected the 60HZ refresh rate)
reboot and cross your fingures. This took me all day - hope it works for you

problems with address
thanks for reply.
I am having some problems with these addresses
deb http://www.linex.org/sources/linex/debian sarge linex
deb http://www.linex.org/sources/linex/debian woody linex
can not connect to the url error.
I have added these lines to the sources.list exactly as they are here, is that correct (new to debian)
thanks

Hmm. I re-input those lines exactly, to be sure, and they work fine for me. Not sure what the problem could be, but maybe it has to do with location?
Anyways, here is a link to a site that has a long list of extra repositories.
http://www1.apt-get.org/search.php?quer ... %5B%5D=all
I already did the search, so just scroll down until you find a repository that includes fglrx-4.3.0-driver and fglrx-4.3.0-control-qt3.
cheers

when you get into the screen selecting the resolution
with
#dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
don't forget to highlight the desired resolution with the arrow keys and then hit space....i repeat, heat the space bar

Fixed, thanks
That fixed it, the problem was simply that damn space bar, i think i pressed every key on the keyboard (except space). I thought because i could select the resolution in GNOME that it must have been selected and i needed some kind of driver.
so thanks for your help, all.
