Hi all,
I installed Sarge on my laptop and everything went smooth. Only after installing the xwindows modules and the gnome desktop environment I'm having problems. During startup it comes with some failures about not being able to load the gdm and shuts it down again.
I'm fairly sure the problems has got something to do with the data I entered on setup. I couldn't find any guides to tell me what to answer on the technical questions about the screen such as identifiers etc so I went with my best guesses..
Can anyone help me on this, is there a way to find the right answers?
I've got a NVidia Geforce 440 card, LCD screen with standard keyboard, synaptics touchpad and USB mouse, and TV output, etc..
Thanks!

x setup with gnome fails!
Re: x setup with gnome fails!
You can reach the configuration screens about your graphic card and monitor that you were asked during install, if you execute as root in a terminal:koen wrote:Hi all,

Code: Select all
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
If that doesn't help, try installing and using the package module-assistant, which may help you to compile a nvidia module.
I don't have a nvidia graphic card, so I'm just giving you general ways of how I would do it. You could also try searching in google for your graphic card + debian, and see if there are any steps you must make to make it work in debian. But I sugest you first try what I told you.
The Debian Documentation website contains the FAQ, Installation Manual and the Release Notes for Etch. They're helpful if you want to learn more about debian!
