Debian Setup (Kubuntu/Ubuntu/Demudi) won't run GDM

#1 Post by loninappleton »

Well, I've finally come to Debian HQ with this question:

Various Live cd versions of Debian wrappers such as Demudi from Agnula and Ubuntu will display
on my old video card that I'm using for setup of a new system which is a Diamond Stealth 2000 Pro.

As soon as i run the installer, I lose video altogether as the Debian base installer runs.

I've seen an error message at the GDM (Gnome Display Manager) but what is more common to happen is I hear a 'click' on the monitor for
resolution change and then the screen goes
blank.

This happens across 3 Debian installer routines from the aforementioned Demudi, Ubuntu, Kubuntu.

While I'm in here, I'd appreciate a recommnedation either Nvidia or ATI/other
for a cheap vid card to get this thing going.

Thanks and this is my first time in here.

:-)

Well, for linux compatablility, nVidia seems to be better. I have heard horror stories of people trying to get an ATI card working on linux. nVidia aparently has open source linux drivers.

There seems to be plenty of NVidia horror stories too.

On that other issue, some guy responded by saying that his brother had a similar screen blackout problems which he fixed by typing
something with i845or something in it which
straightend out the screen problem but no news
how to write it to the disk. I didn't know what
what he was talking about.
