xorg upgrade and fglrx driver

#1 Post by tim »

Hi all,

Last night I upgraded my sid installation and replaced xfree with xorg. Before the upgrade I had 3d acceleration working with ati's fglrx driver. I uninstalled the fglrx driver before the upgrade, and after upgrading I downloaded the latest ati driver for xorg. But when I try to install the fglrx driver I get the following error message:

# dpkg -i fglrx-driver_8.16.20-1_i386.deb
(Reading database ... 123156 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking fglrx-driver (from fglrx-driver_8.16.20-1_i386.deb) ...
dpkg-divert: `diversion of /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.2 to /usr/share/fglrx/diversions/libGL.so.1.2 by fglrx-driver' clashes with `diversion of /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.2 to /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.2.distrib by fglrx-4-3-0'
dpkg: error processing fglrx-driver_8.16.20-1_i386.deb (--install):
subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 2
Errors were encountered while processing:
fglrx-driver_8.16.20-1_i386.deb

Does anyone know how I can get around this? The "divert stuff" is left over from the old XFree installation, but I don't know how to get rid of it.

Thanks in advance,

Tim

Ok, a little progress. i managed to install the fglrx driver by issuing the following command:

rm -rf /usr/share/fglrx

Then I edited /var/lib/dpkg/diversions to remove three lines about libGL.so.1

But still no 3d acceleration.

Any ideas?

For anyone who might have a similar problem, I finally managed to get 3d acceleration working by using ATI's automatic installer, which can be downloaded here:

https://support.ati.com/ics/support/def ... lderID=300
I shut down x and ran the installer from the coommand line. The installer asks a few questions, and I chose to "install generic driver" rather than the "specific distribution" option. After I restarted X I had 3d acceleration.
