StartX EE errors after kernel recompile

#1 Post by Aesir »

I was running 2.2.20 kernel using only the command line interface. I then installed XFCE4 successfully I then wanted to upgrade the kernel. Iexpected apt-get -u dist-upgrade to do that, but uname -a showed it never made any change. I then decided to compile the 2.6.14.2 kernel and insatall it. That seemed to go well. However, Startx then failsed with the folowing errors:

I did some research, and this seems mouse related, but I've rerun:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
and it's set the same way that successfully ran under xfce4 under 2.2.20

Any comments or help?

Could I have lost something in the recompile? How can I check that out?

Thanks.

Looks like X can't setup your mouse. Tell us what kind of mouse you have and and post your XFree config file.

Also, I'd check what version of XFree you're running, since you had a 2.2 kernel (really?). You might want to upgrade the xserver.

I tried two different mice. First, the same mouse that worked fine with the 2.2 kernel.. It's a 2 button PS2 connector ball mouse from Dell/Logitech. I used exactly the same settings that worked for the 2.2 setup. Then I tried a M$ Intellimouse 1.1A PS2 compatible with a wheel. I tried several settings with dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 setup, mainly /dev/psaux and PS/2 or ImPS/2, which had worked with the same hardware.

I'm wondering if I could have lost support for the PS/2 port when compiliing the kernel. How can I check that it's supported and if USB is supported or if I did something stupid during the recompile?

Here's /var/log/XFree86.0.log:

XFree86 Version 4.3.0.1 (Debian 4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge1 20050901212727 fjp@localhost.localdomain)

Yes, I really was running 2.2 and here's some dpkg info:

Well, I asked for the x server config file (which is probably /etc/X11/XF86Config-4) and not the log file, but maybe I should have been more specific.

Here's the mouse InputDevice section of my XF86Config-4 file (same as in my newer xorg.conf file) that works with my microsoft wheel mouse:

Code: Select all

Section "InputDevice"
	Identifier "PS/2 Mouse"
	Driver "mouse"
	Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
        Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
	Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
	Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true"
	Option "Emulate3Timeout" "70"
	Option "SendCoreEvents" "true"
EndSection
You probably want something like this, though you might want to try /dev/mouse instead of /dev/psaux. Check your /dev directory to see what's available. My system also has /dev/input/mouse0, mouse1, etc. Maybe check into these. I'm pretty sure that the names of some of these devices changed from kernel to kernel, and that's likely the problem that you're having. The old device is there, but under a new name and no symlink was made from the old name to the new.

NEAT TRICK I JUST LEARNED: as root type:

Code: Select all

less -f /dev/input/mouse0
and move the mouse. The console should print garbage when the mouse moves and nothing when it's still if you have selected the correct mouse device with less (press CTRL-C, then the Q key to break out of less). This is a quick way to test many possible devices for mouse input.

No, you were clear enough and I actually understood what you wanted, but I was too stupid to know where it was located. Here it is:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Configured Mouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "CorePointer"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection
You probably want something like this, though you might want to try /dev/mouse instead of /dev/psaux.
I've tried them both. I even put yours in, and got the same result.
Check your /dev directory to see what's available.
Thanks, this helps a bit, but I'm not sure what I'm looking for. /dev/psaux is there though.
My system also has /dev/input/mouse0, mouse1, etc.
So does mine.
Maybe check into these. I'm pretty sure that the names of some of these devices changed from kernel to kernel, and that's likely the problem that you're having. The old device is there, but under a new name and no symlink was made from the old name to the new.
Will this ls from /dev/input help:

I get "No such device" for all mouse0 to mouse3.

Thanks for the help.

Well, I'm about out of ideas, but that trick with "less" should also be tried with /dev/psaux and /dev/mouse, as well as any other devices which might be mouse devices. You should at least be able to determine if any of them are sending data.

Not sure about checking the PS/2 hardware. Is your keyboard PS/2? If so, I'm guessing that PS/2 support is not the problem with your mouse.
