Another window manager

#1 Post by denise »

Hello people.

I've tried Gnome and KDE but both are not excactly what I want.
I like the nice artwork but functionality is more inportant for me.
Google gave me a lot of alternatives but it doesn't make my choise any easier.

What would you people recommend and why?

My favorite is iceWM, it's fast and light

But there more :

Blackbox
Fluxbox (based on Blackbox)
Openbox
Windowmaker
Windowlab
ion
aewm
fvwm
Pekwm

This is only a smal selection of al the windowmanagers available.

The choice is very personal. I say try them and make your own choice.

FVWM absolutely rocks. Combined with fvwm-themes, it gives as much eye candy as gnome/kde or any other, but has way more configurability features.

I prefer fluxbox for the simplicity and low memory usage.

The "features" I use are the keyboard bindings (to control my media player mostly), the ability to reposition the titlebar buttons (close box on the LEFT!, other buttons on the RIGHT!), and that's about it. I do not use the "slit".

Window Managers

If you want to see the possibilities go to www.lynucs.org. It is a site with nothing but screenshots of linux and bsd desktops. It has every window manager you could think of plus some you may have not heard off. Plus many apps.

That should give you some ideas.

I'm one of the 35 or 45 people in the world who use UDE/UWM, though currently I'm sitting in KDE. I think most people think UDE is ugly, but I like the simplicity and find it to be elegant.

I like XFce, and have gone through a couple fluxbox phases. I don't have the patience to go through some of the configuration necessary to make any of these WMs and DEs pretty, so I either go with GNOME/KDE when I want a full GUI, and UDE when I want pure simplicity.

fluxbox is my choice. Mostly because of its speed, but also cause it can be made very pretty. And I think that kde is just ugly.

Hi,

After playing for months with KDE, for days with fluxbox and FVWM, ... finally I went back to my favorite, called Window Maker.

Anyhow, just try some of the available window managers, and choose the one you like most. There is no so called 'best' window manager, ...

Cheers, Moonlight

When download, for example pekwm, and I logout, it aint it the list of wm's I can choose from. Some wm's are in the list after installing, but some aren't. Is there a file which GDM uses to display the availible wm's?

I like Xfce. It runs smoothly on my "classic" computer, yet still offers decent appearance and basic configuration options.

I personaly use XFCE4.2 Beta 1, and everything goes well... XFCE is a desktop environment, juste like GNOME or KDE, but it runs faster than these two ones...

At this time, Sarge only provides XFCE4.0, but you can get XFCE4.2 (which is different in some points) from the XFCE ftp...

Juste have a look here : http://www.xfce.org
And here for the debian packages : http://www.os-cillation.com/article.php?sid=37

Another vote here for Xfce4. I run it both on my desktop as well as on my laptop. Very fast, easy configuration and has quite a few nice little side-tools one can find useful.

But does anyone know the file which GDM uses as a resource to identify the current WM's installed? Anyhow, my favorite is OpenBox.
