OCR and Scanner prog for Debian (Ubuntu/kubuntu)

#1 Post by Durham »

I'm a teacher at a school that primarily uses Linux. At my school there are two blind pupils, and the teachers uses scanner and OCR-program to convert text in books and newspapers to braille-print. To do this we use computers with WinXP and OmniPage. (I would love to replace this OS)

Are there good for OCR and Scanning?

Yes there are.

Debian has SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy) and an OCR program.

Now, the problem is that there are some scanners out there that are not "Linux-friendly".

Let me know what scanner(s) you have (make and model helps a lot) so I can check this compatibility for you.

Cheers,
