HOWTO? Totem Mozilla 'streaming video.'

#1 Post by andrewphoto »

Debian Sarge.
Please help me, I am struggling.

I want to be able to access 'streaming video,' in Mozilla.
Is Totem-Xine & W32codecs & Mozplugger sufficient?

Any help/pointers would be very much appreciated.
Best Wishes, andyp.

Totem-xine is excellent, install libdvdcss2 and I can play DVD.
I need 'streaming video,' in a browser.
I am confused, Totem-xine, Totem-gstreamer, xine-ui, mplayer, vlc.

Please, any thoughts people.

Alternatively, you can use mplayer, which is not official in Debian (hopefully yet, because it's a good piece of software).

It offers an embedded player for mozilla (and firefox too).

If you want to give it a try, you have to fetch in Marillat's repository. To get there, you need to add this to your apt-get/Synaptic source list file:

## Marillat repo for multimedia and acroread
deb ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/ sarge main

Cheers.

I installed Xine (Totem,) and some codecs, and installed Mozplugger.
The first think I do is read the README.Debian (for Mozplugger.)
The README suggests that I look at the Configure file /etc/mozpluggerrc.
Mozplugger TOTALLY implies that one should have mplayer, so I think that is the way to go.

Incidentally, I have just completed a set-up which allows me to view video offline and online using Mozilla browser.
I have tried kaffeine with kaffeine-mozilla plug-in. Does not work for quite a number of streaming video.
Then I go to mplayer download website, follow the README instructions to install mplayer with 'essential' codecs and a Corelian 'skin' to provide a GUI. The next thing to do, which is not mentioned in the mplayer website, is to install a mozilla-mplayer plug-in. For this, you have to use the 'non-free contrib' repository to 'apt-get install mozilla-mplayer'.
Now I can watch video offline and use mozilla to watch streaming video online from all the sites I can access so far.
I recommend this approach.

Happy New Year.

Ken
