#1 Post by Picard »

hi,
I have installed Sarge 3.1 but with DCC 3.0 so now I have basic system. then I tried to install fluxbox so I entered following commands:

Code: Select all

aptitude install x-window-system
aptitude update
aptitude install fluxbox
startx
x-window didn't start and in log i've found:

Code: Select all

Fatal error:
no screen found
I have ATI Radeon X550 but also tried to run under vesa driver - error was the same. oh and when I was trying to install ATI driver from ati site there was following error:

Code: Select all

[Message] Kernel Module : Trying to install a precompiled kernel module.
[Message] Kernel Module : Precompiled kernel module version mismatched.
[Error] Kernel Module : No kernel module build environment - please consult readme.
can somebody help me?

Do you have everything from ATI checklist:
Minimum System Requirements
Before attempting to install the ATI Proprietary Linux driver, the following software must be installed:

POSIX Shared Memory (/dev/shm) support is required for 3D apps
glibc version 2.2 or 2.3
Linux kernel 2.4 or higher
XOrg 6.7or 6.8; XFree86 version 4.1, 4.2, or 4.3

System Recommendations
For best performance and ease of use, ATI recommends the following:

Kernel module build environment - should include the following:
Kernel source code: Either the Kernel Source or Kernel Headers packages
ISSE Support enabled in your Linux Kernel
Applies to Intel Pentium III and later CPUs only
Enabled by default on version 2.4 and later kernels
The rpm utility should be installed and configured correctly on your system
QT version 2.x.x is needed for the ATI Control Panel, but is not mandatory

Note: The following 32 bit packages must be installed in order for 64 bit drivers to install and work properly:
· XFree86-Mesa-libGL
· libstdc++
· libgcc
· XFree86-libs
· fontconfig
· expat
· freetype
· zlib

I'm glad it works!

Just curious... how is the 3D performance with your ATI card? Do you like it?
