Start X does not work

#1 Post by Guest »

Hi, I recently installed Debian and when loading it for the first time my screen flashes on and off for a few seconds then says
"I cannot start the x server (your cgraphical interfance). It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the x server output to diagnose the proglem?"

then i answer yes and the response is

"warning: process set to nice value 0 instead of -10 as requested

The interesting part sould be on the bottom of the log. The lines beginning with (EE) indicate an error. Could you paste the error lines from the X log?

I had the exact same problem.

Same message word for word.

After research I thought that he wasn't starting my video card.

I fooled with it for too long and finally gave up!

I also couldn't get him to start my ethernet cards.

Debian (Linux) sounds great until run into problems.

I haven't given up...But am discouraged.

Install wasn't difficult...What do you do when it won't work though?!

To answer the question of the post before this one: what to do when things don't work as expected...

Well, first of all, you should try to collect some crucial information about the situation, your system and the error messages.

As a poster before me stated, the errors in the logfile of XFree86 start with (EE), so you should read them carefully and try to understand them. Maybe you won't understand everything right now, but the (EE) lines give you vital information to troubleshoot the situation.

Secondly, you read some basic information about the X Window System (probably some good docs can be found on http://tldp.org/ (The Linux Documentation Project)) and how to (manually or semi-automatically) configure a basic setup.

Next step if you still haven't found out what's going wrong, try to feed the (EE) lines into Google (or any other good search engine, like http://clusty.com/ ). Most of the time you'll find other people who have had the exact same situation (or alike) and found a solution already.

As a final remark, I'd like to encourage you not to drop Debian GNU/Linux when things like these aren't going like you'd expected. It's a /great/ learning experience which will be the base of your Linux-loving future ;).

And, of course, in the rare case even google doesn't want to share its secrets with you, just ask us here :)

Good luck!

Thanks for the help, I'll keep at it.

I just ordered some new books and will continue to search for the solution.

It's quite a learning experience after spending so many years in a PC and MAC environment!

Thanks again.

A bit off-topic, but I think the learning experience is enormously rewarding. If you need to do things in a different way then just 'clicketyclick', some respect for the underlying complexity of computers will grow.

Although the learning curve is a bit scary to some people on first sight, it is the best way to learn what exactly you're doing, which in the end gives you full control over you own Linux box.

Happy Debianing!

I did the research and found that both my ATI video card and nvidia onboard LAN are being recognized.

Drivers are loaded for the video but not for the LAN.

This research is a daunting task for someone new who doesn't understand the commands or their structure!

Occasionally after spending hours at the keyboard with books and a laptop running on the net I get a command to work!

Mostly it's just an endless array of not a valid command or other debian rejections!!

I've located the needed drivers (ATI) and nvidia on the net and downloaded their set-up files to another PC since I can't connect to the net with the Linux.

Of course they are most likely Linux only files so the question is how do I get these to my Debian system?

After reading the installation files from the manufacturer's website I became even more concerned!

Once I get them...How will I get them where they need to go?!

I got the card info by running scanpci -v | less.

I tried 1spci but it won't work.

Surely I'm entering the commands wrong...I've tried all this as root and at times I get replies saying permission denied when I try to look at log files.

This will surely test your patience!

I tried to configure several other video drivers by running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 with the same EE results...Can't find device, no screen available, fatal error.

I installed from Debian 2.6.9-rcl.

The install cd reads 3.0r3

XFree 86 is v. 4.1.0.1

I had to use the compact version on original install in order to get the installer to recognize my scsi controller and hard drives.

It doesn't see my SATA RAID configuration at all.

I also tried to rerun the installer hoping there would be a bigger driver package on the safe 2.2 version but as you might suspect when you boot from the install cd to have access to those driver files that safe version 2.2 won't see my scsi drives so I can't mount .

Without that I have no way of getting the extra driver files (if any) onto my HDD.

This is a new cpu that I just built last week with all new and updated components.

Asus A7N8X-E
2gb RAM
2-Fujitsu scsi drives on Adaptec 19160 scsi card
Asus Radeon 9200 SE video card
2-WD SATA drives set up in RAID O config.
2-LAN controllers(Marvell Gigabit)(Nvidia 10/100)

I didn't think I'd have any problems like this with all new components.

I have the Debian dedicated to a scsi drive as a stand alone.

No troubles booting into debian from a floppy.

Funny part is I installed it on a 5 year old laptop just to feel it (debian)out last week and it went good except the video driver was wrong (I just picked one and it worked) but didn't function well, but I at least had something GUI on the screen!

There again I couldn't get the LAN card to work either.

I've since removed that install.

Thanks for listening...Any tidbits of advice you could throw this way would be appreciated!

In the meantime I'm looking for a helper that can at least get me over this start-up hurdle, from there I think I'll be OK.

I live in a very rural area without access to technical support.

Thanks for your help.

Hi All,

geez, that's a bit rude, hijiacking someone elses thread. Please, whilst I'm very new here, this is a no no. Plesae, just start your own thread. The person who started this one has put a lot of time/effort etc into detailing their problem and others who have replied have too. Try and do the right thing by all. Cheers.
