Pdf reader with notes capability?

#1 Post by Telemachus »

Does anyone know of a Linux pdf reader which allows you to write (and save) notes about the pdf as you read? (If you have no idea what I mean, Skim does this very nicely on Mac OS X.) Thanks in advance.

What's the difference between Adobe Acrobat and Adobe
Reader?

Adobe® Acrobat® and Adobe Reader are separate applications that let you open and view
documents created in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF). However, Adobe Acrobat
lets you create PDF documents, add bookmarks and comments, change security settings,
and edit PDF documents in other ways. Adobe Reader is free software that lets you open
and view any PDF document.

Thanks for the suggestions. I installed Acroread (the Linux version of Adobe Reader), but I don't see any way to add notes to pages using it. I don't have Wine installed, and I'm a little reluctant to do it, but if I can't find a native Linux app, I'll try Foxit.

Thanks.

Thanks as well for the suggestion. As the article's author says, Xournal isn't really built for pdf notes, so it's a bit clumsy, but I will keep trying to tweak it.

My wife is getting a kick out of this, since it's the first time that I'm officially jealous of an application from her Mac.

Edit: I think you added the second link (PDF Viewer) as I tried the first. I'm trying that now. Man I hate Wine. Hate, hate, hate it.

Second edit: Ok, the current results for anyone playing along at home:
  • Acroread - closed source, lacks the feature
  • Xournal - open source, sort of has the feature but not really. It allows you to write on pdfs, but only by treating the page as an image and writing over the whole page. It doesn't really have the moveable, editable, deleteable sticky notes feature. (Not it's fault, really, it wasn't build to do this anyhow.)
  • Foxit - closed source, Windows app. On my Lenny box, it won't run, not even under Wine. I can't be bothered right now to find out why.
  • PDF-XChange Viewer - closed source, Windows app. It works under Wine, and it has exactly the features I want. But it's a Windows app and requires Wine. For me that means it's not a real solution, though maybe I'm just being difficult.
Thanks again to everyone for ideas.

I have wine. because I need windows for my work and sometimes I am too lazy to switch between debian and windows that's why I run the same apps in wine. Windows developers are too paranoid. They desable important features even in trial versions. I always use crack first to test the apps, and , if I am fully satisfied, I buy it later on.

I just saw PDF Studio. I think it has the features you want, but it costs $60 and it's proprietary.
Qoppa Software wrote:PDF Studioâ„¢ for Linux, Mac & Windows

PDF Studio is an easy to use, yet powerful PDF editor tool that works on Linux, Mac and Windows. It allows users to review and annotate PDF documents, scan-to-pdf, fill PDF forms, change security, highlight text and more...
  • View & Print: Open any pdf document and send it to the printer. Documents will be automatically resized to fit the paper size. PDF Studio supports all types of pdf fonts.
  • Sticky Notes, Typewriter tool, Graphical Tools, Audio Comments, Hyperlinks: Open any pdf document and add your sticky notes or comments to the document using text, graphic, and audio markup tools. You can add free text notes, draw shapes such as arrows, circles, rectangles. Record or import a sound. Add hyperlinks. Type text anywhere in a PDF document and fill forms that do not contain interactive form fields. Jump from one annotation to the next using the navigation pane.

But seriously - what would ever give the impression that it's OK to post cracks? You know better than that....... How may cracker forums are there already? This is not about to become another.

Back to the topic, an update on results. I'm underwhelmed with my Linux options for a few reasons. First, they aren't inter-operable with Skim. That is, they can't see each other's notes. (Some seem to delete notes from other programs when you save in them, others preserve the notes, but only see their own notes.) Second, I'm less and less willing to play with closed-source, badly ported Windows applications.

So, for the moment, I'm happily using Skim on OS X (at work and by borrowing my wife's if I have to check something at home), and in Debian I'm back to plaintext notes in Vim.

Thanks again to everyone who made a suggestion. I'll update if I find a good native Linux program.

Because that was not a crack but a link to the crack for my friend, Telemachus, whom I respect. And besides, It's the Linux world here, and the crack was for Windows, and it is not necessary that it will work on Debian, unless someone known is pretty sure of it that I doubt actually. And besides, I don't know how much the administrators are connected to the debian creators, but if they are so picky, all the apps with cracking capabilities should be expelled from the distribution. Otherwise that comment in square brackets above sounds like hypocrisy, and actually it is.
