cannot get a screen resolution greater than 800x600

I'm a linux n00b and was wondering if i need a new ati driver to increase my screen resolution. i'm using the 2.6 kernel of sarge and would preferably like to use kde. i built my own computer so i'm wondering if maybe my components are not compatable with higher resolutions, but the components are relatively new (ie 2 years or less). any help would be appreciated

I had the same problem everytime after installation. It seems that the installers config software is pretty useless (this is all guessing ;) ). Try configuring again with:
'xf86cfg -textmode'
