no sound theme
I have a sid/testing installation, using gnome. I have no sound themes. The Sound Theme tab is greyed out. Sound itself is working.
Re: no sound theme
try this:
applications/system tools/configuration editor/desktop/gnome/sound
enable "enable_esd"

Re: no sound theme
No change. In my System->Preferences->Sound control panel, all options on the Sounds Effects tab are disabled.
In the gconf-editor section you mentioned, the default_mixer_device is blank. The theme_name is freedesktop
I have pulse audio.

Re: no sound theme
And I'm not sure where they're going with this. At this point the .26 gnome-control-center appears to be using gnome-volume-control for sound preferences, but the effects are still greyed out. We'll just have to wait and see how it plays out. I consider the breakage minor since I do have sound (including system sounds, or at least some of them (haven't checked specifically).
Re: no sound theme
You can try either of these 2 methods to install the freedesktop-sound-theme.

I downloaded the file using the wget command from the 2nd website and then used the steps from the 1st website to install.
