Installed on a wheezy system, and it pulled in pulseaudio too. Most keyboard shortcuts have gone, and the touchpad won't respond to taps even though it's enabled.

It's too incomplete yet to be usable. I'll wait until it hits the stable/testing repos.

You really shouldn't be trying to downgrade a major installation like gnome 3. It simply won't work. For something like this, you should backup your root partition before the upgrade, so you can restore it if need be.

About battery status:

# apt-get install gnome-power-manage

Don't worry, lots of us have done it. You've done something risky by using testing/unstable/experimental packages, so a backup is always a good idea first. If it was 1 or 2 packages, you might get away with it, but gnome 3 was quite a lot and changed some major stuff.

alr11389 wrote:I installed gnome3 just now and I run this:

# apt-get install -t experimental gnome3-session

This installed me a lot of packages but removes 7. One of these 7 was gnome-session-common I think. The other 6 seems not be important for my problem.

Now, I'm on GNome3 but it is very very ugly.I have activities and more but windows are ugliest and I cant open, for example, system configuration or volume control...

Any suggestions?

To fix this install the gnome-themes-standard package from experimental. I think you have run in to this bug: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=617522

Can you check that you have run the aptitude update command to make these changes take effect. If this still does not fix it easily, you will either need to manually help aptitude sort out the dependency mess, basically look at what problems it flags up and try to fix them individually one by one, or you could wait for the latest gnome packages to enter Debian.

I pulled gnome3 from the experimental repos on my Linux Mint Debian Edition install with this command :

apt-get install -t experimental gnome3-session

It's not nearly as polished as the demo from the live cd's and not really worth it until the rough edges are polished a little more. I could not access any sort of configuration menus, the background couldn't be changed from that plain blue horror, the icons were all messed up, etc. Lots of things need to be ironed out before it can be fun to use. I have to say though, I like the way the activities button works. This WILL be a great desktop once it is a little more debugged.

Have in mind that what we have in experimental is not GNOME 3 but the alpha version and judging by the version numbers it's not even the latest alpha. You can find the status of GNOME 3 in Debian here - http://www.0d.be/debian/debian-gnome-3.0-status.html . So far only 12 out of 117 packages are uptodate.

Try running this command: aptitude install gnome-control-center=1:2.91.93-1 gnome-control-center-data=1:2.91.93-1 gnome-themes-standard=2.91.93-1 . It should update the gnome control center to the latest version available and fix the icons.

Anyone find that System Settings and My Account don't open any app when clicked?

I also that there are options to the left of my login name on the top right of the screen. However there are no icons I can see there and I find this out quite by mistake.

I have the same problem. Better to wait for a experimental version.

I already have gnome-power-manager but it doesn't show me battery status. When I run aspi I get following message

Code: Select all

No support for device type: power_supply

i wonder if it is worthwhile turning this into a general gnome3 experimental thread

As a separate issue has anyone got the accounts manager working. When I launch it, using the My Account link in the shell menu, I get a Failed to contact the accounts service error?

I still just compile it using JHbuild. This allows me to have a bit of the gnome3 interface and my gnome 2 apps. I will probably wait for it to hit testing.

Do you compile only the shell or the entire GNOME 3?

It pulls in a lot of Gnome 3, but it runs on top of your existing Gnome 2 without changing anything.

Can I install gnome-3-stable? (http://www.gnome.org/)
The terminal says that gnome3-session can not be found. :?:
