Did you try to play the mp4 file in another mediaplayer?
Vlc for instance plays alomst everyting without extra plugin's.
You could give Vlc a try

I can try VLC but don't want to install it just for the sake of playing mp4s. Are you saying it's impossible to play .mp4 files in Totem Movie player?

This system runs Wheezy and uses the Debian Multimedia repository. Totem plays all the MP4 files that I have.
These are the Gstreamer plug-ins currently installed:
Code: Select all
i A gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
i A gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
i A gstreamer0.10-plugins-base
i A gstreamer0.10-plugins-good
i A gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly

Tried VLC/SMPlayer in Squeeze. It's slightly better in these two than Totem i.e. I can see video in the beginning (for a second). And then it freezes. Is it safe to assume that there is no proven way to play mp4s in Squeeze.

PS: Yes, I have debian multimedia in my /etc/apt/sources.list

Thanks

Unfortunately, you seem to be the exception, .mp4 files seems to be playable out of the box in Squeeze with VLC and mplayer for almost everyone. Maybe it's some video output driver issue? How about trying
Code: Select all
mplayer <file-name>

and
Code: Select all
vlc <file-name>

in the terminal and see what error messages come up; that's a powerful troubleshooting technique.

I have found the solution to playback of mp4 with Squeeze.

Enable the backports repository by editing your sources.list file located at /etc/apt/sources.list. Add the following:

Code: Select all
deb http://ftp.at.debian.org/debian-backports/ squeeze-backports main

Update apt by typing the following into a root terminal:

Code: Select all
apt-get update

Install libavcodec-extra-53:

Code: Select all
apt-get install libavcodec-extra-53

Play mp4 files in any player.
