setting correct screen res with sqeeze

Postby jowan » 2011-06-18 08:11

Hi everyone,

I just set up my dad's pc with Debian Sqeeze. It runs perfectly fine and after trying a lot of distro's Debian is the only one that will not crash or freeze up X.

Now we're forced to using my own 17" monitor instead of his 19" wide screen since the max res is 1280 x 1024 in Sqeeze. What he needs is 1360 x 768.

I found out in the wiki that xorg.conf needs to be edited. Since the file does not exist it needs to be created by running "Xorg -configure" in tty after stopping GDM. when running the "Xorg -configure" command this is the output;

" vmware: Please ignore above "FATAL: Module vmwgfx bot found."
(++) Using config file: "/root/xorg.conf.new"
(==) Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"
Number of created screens does not match number of detected devices.
Configuration failed. "

I cannot find a solution to this in the forums. Does anyone have any ideas? it's an Intel Sandy Bridge integrated graphics chip.

I've tried running "Xorg:1 -configure" as mentioned in a forum but that simply gives me a "unknown command" answer. All help is very welcome.

Thanx allot,

Joe

I'm going to guess that was a typo an it really said "FATAL: Module vmwgfx not found." because a bot found would be really bad.

Code: Select all
"Xorg -configure" command this is the output;

" vmware: Please ignore above "FATAL: Module vmwgfx bot found."
(++) Using config file: "/root/xorg.conf.new"
(==) Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"
Number of created screens does not match number of detected devices.
Configuration failed. "

this doesn't make sense, should be a lot more output when you run Xorg -configure? list of drivers, Xorg version,etc... if there is a file named /root/xorg.conf.new that's your skeleton for xorg.conf

Are you absolutely sure you aren't making this up and just trying to swipe your Dad's monitor?

oh yeah, what's up with the vmware config I hear that is pretty tricky to set up?

If it successfully runs X @ 1280 with no xorg.conf post the /var/log/Xorg.0.log and don't change nothing, that's a pretty good outof box experience. What exactly did you install on what kind of hardware?

If your using a sandy bridge processor and intel HD graphics, which you probably are, you could try installing a newer kernel from backports. I installed 2.6.39 and without an xorg.conf was able to get the correct resolution for my display when previously I was limited.

I am however now having a different problem with my graphics. I can't play any games or videos and I could before upgrading my kernel. Perhaps someone else can help you with that.

I just solved a similar problem on my Core i7 2600K system. I had Debian Squeeze amd64 with 2.6.32-5 kernel. My PC would crash whenever I tried to change the resolution in KDE, or start a game in fullscreen mode, or if I selected Console Login at the KDM login screen. Eventually I found out that X was using vesa drivers instead of intel. glxgears gave me about 70FPS at 1280x1024. So I checked out some forums and decided to upgrade the kernel from backports.
Ensure that you have installed Debian of the right architecture - amd64 in my case.
Install the following updated packages from back-ports
(1)linux-headers-2.6.38
(2)linux-image-2.6.38 (This is the updated kernel)
(3)xserver-xorg

Now glxgears gives my about 300FPS at the same resolution.
And don't bother about xorg.conf. In fact, remove it from /etc/X11/
The newer version of Xorg does all the auto-configuring at boot time.

Hope this solves your problem.

Had the same issue with my i7 2600 setup and Intel DQ67SW mobo. Had to look around for some info to do the backports (only been using debian for a day!) so i thought i'd share...

1. Add the following to /etc/apt/sources.list: deb http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports squeeze-backports main
2. apt-get update
3. 'apt-get install' by itself woun't install properly so you need to do:

apt-get install -t squeeze-backports linux-image-2.6.38-bpo.2-amd64 linux-headers-2.6.38-bpo.2-amd64 xservers

This sorts out X for booting into a normal kernel but X is broken under Dom0 with Xen 4.0. Anyone know how to fix?
