XFCE update notifications

Postby larynx » 2011-08-19 17:40

I'm currently using Gnome 2.30.2 on Debian Stable and looking to try out XFCE.

I installed XFCE 4.6.2 on Debian Stable and I'm looking for an update notifier, I'm not sure if one comes installed by default because I don't see anything popping up and notifying me about updates.
I was think about installing update-notifier but it has a lot of Gnome dependencies so I was looking for something smaller.

What should I use?

Thanks.

Can you be a little more specific?

I see xfce4-notifyd, notification-daemon-xfce, xfce4-smartpm-plugin and I'm sure there are plenty of others.

Use update-notifier. It is a gtk program, but running xfce, you should have most of that installed already. You may be trying to install with recommended packages or update-manager-gnome. Don't do that.
Code: Select all
apt-get install --no-install-recommends update-notifier update-manager

When I run apt-get to install update-notifier (with no-recommends) I still get update-manager-gnome as dependency. The package update-manager doesn't exist, I also checked http://packages.debian.org/stable/gnome/update-notifier and it says the same thing

I am using Xfce and as far as I know, yes, you need the Gnome things if you want the update manager/notifier. I could not find something specific to Xfce.

That's quite a disappointment but thanks for responding.
