Hi there,

I have been struggling quite a bit with this Nvidia issue. I tried several of the options in this thread including changing my preference file in /etc/apt/. All this without success to downgrade xserver-xorg so far. Could anyone be so kind to describe step by step what we have to do to use Debian backports and come back to a descent usability of Gnome? I am posting because 62chevy suggested we could ask :wink: Thanks for any help

This worked for me perfectly, without any problems, restarted X server and it's back to normal (I'm using Debian Testing).

I really hope this gets fixed the proper way soon...

This can be don from the command line by editing /etc/apt/sources.list and adding backports as other have shown. You can also do this from Synaptic>Settings>Repositories then click the tab for Other software then the button Add.

Update and install as suggested.

Well I just installed the 285.05.09 drivers and upgrade my previously downgraded xserver-common to 2.1.11 and it works but lags as hell :| so i downgrade xserver again, but still using the 285.05.09

I concluded that 285.05.09 is an improvement, but not a complete solution. For the moment I've changed over to the nouveau driver, and I may stay with it as it works perfectly and I have no need of 3D.

Thanks for testing this out for the rest of us.

I installed the 285.05.09 driver yesterday and Iceweasel, nautilus, eye of gnome and several other programs work just fine but gnome system monitor and shotwell are very sluggish. So I would say the system is back 95% plus but your mileage may vary. My 3d games played just fine nothing fancy just tuxracer, flight gear and Family Farm.

I tried the 285.05.09 driver with the current xserver-common in wheezy (2:1.11.1.-1). Nothing changed for me. Both iceweasel and icedove are nearly unusable, CPU usage high... the usual symptoms. So I again downgraded to the version in squeeze-backports. I have Quadro NVS 135M (rev a1).

Okay hang in there things are getting better I failed to mention I'm running Sid and Wheezy is lagging behind some what. I have two installs of Sid one to test X and the nVidia drivers and my main one that is pinned to version 2:1.10.4-1 and have put any upgrades to xorg on hold.

Just in case you are interested in the why everything seems sluggish. http://lists.x.org/archives/xorg-devel/ ... 26050.html
They are trying to decide who fixes it so now we wait.

A note about nouveau: I had to move the file /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-installer-disable-nouveau.conf out of there before I could use the nouveau driver (apologies if this has been mentioned before).

It all comes back to the us vs them. I saw it in the Coast Guard deck hand vs engineer, At AutoZone Retail vs Commercial but now it open source vs closed source. Human nature at it worst I guess.

Yes this I know oh so well. I have been in this industry for a long time. Personally I would not need to worry about this as I don't really need the 3D effects in the host, but I develop and test regression in a virtualizer and the newer guests with gnome3 and the like will not run properly if the non-free drivers are not installed om the host. I got sick and tired of all the politics and issues with the *other Linux distros I have used and settled on Debian. It is a stable beast, but I need to get around this issue soon or be forced to go back to well you know. I have talked to (name withheld, sorry) and they are seeing if I can get a test copy with the fix. If it works it may not be too long before it shows up here and I can stay a happy Debian fan.

I installed nvidia 275.28 with ABI support, X start and nvidia is enabled but system is slow

After downgraded xorg:

Code: Select all

aptitude install xserver-common=2:1.10.4-1~bpo60+1 xserver-xephyr=2:1.10.4-1~bpo60+1 xserver-xorg-core=2:1.10.4-1~bpo60+1 xserver-xorg-input-evdev=1:2.6.0-2~bpo60+1 xserver-xorg-input-synaptics=1.4.1-1~bpo60+1 xserver-xorg-video-vesa=1:2.3.0-7~bpo60+1
X start but not have nvidia driver enabled (eg google earth don't start)

If i uninstall&reinstall 275.28 X not start

if i reupdate to xorg 1.11 X not start

if i reinstall all dependences nvidia-video-all and others that i uninstalled after downgrade i can restart at point 1 (sistem slow).

How to enable X nvidia & have a normal sistem??

edit: from log xorg.conf the error is that in:
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers

Nvidia installer dont put nvidia_drv.so

After I had experienced the same as you, I did something like that:

1.) completely removed xserver-xorg:

Code: Select all

aptitude purge xserver-xorg
2.) temporarily commented out the Wheezy repository and added Squeeze repository to /etc/apt/sources.list, e.g.:

Code: Select all

deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main contrib non-free
3.) completely reinstalled xserver-xorg (from Squeeze now):

Code: Select all

aptitude update && aptitude install xserver-xorg
4.) reinstalled an older NVIDIA driver (280.13)
Debian Wheezy 32-bit || Xfce 4.8 + Compiz || MSI P7N SLI Platinum | 3 GB DDR2 | Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200 (@ 3.36 GHz) | Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS (driver version 290.1)

I receive to remove only:

Code: Select all

bsh{u} bsh-gcj{u} libart2.0-cil{u} libglade2.0-cil{u}
  libgnome-vfs2.0-cil{u} libgnome2.24-cil{u} libgnomepanel2.24-cil{u}
  libndesk-dbus-glib1.0-cil{u} libndesk-dbus1.0-cil{u} xserver-xorg{p}
  xulrunner-6.0{u}
Is normal?

Give it a try can't hurt anything but your time. If it does not work pin xserver-* in /etc/apt/preferences and just down grade. If you don't know how just ask.

vimftw system to use squeezy repo have caused a dependence problem (i need linux headers of squeeze).

I repurge xorg & reinstall last wheezy version.

Instead of manual installer now i used nvidia-glx packages and sistem (very slow but usable) is started with drivers.

I'm crazy to test & test :shock:

I will wait for decisive updates..
