nvidia-glx 280.13.really.275.28-1 is the nvidia package in Sid's repo's

http://packages.debian.org/sid/nvidia-glx

The package I used was the beta one in experimental which has been tweaked. Good to know about the Sid package and your right about the 285.03-2 and having to use the -ignoreABI switch which I also had to do. Will give your suggestion a try and see what happens.

Ok, I downgraded to the sid packages and removed the -ignoreABI switch in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. This is with the apt pinning removed as well and selected like the 4th or 5th aptitude option to make sure I was not installing any 285 packages (which was the default for some reason). Anyway, I was able to start up the xserver, so some good news there. The same bugs which existed under the 285 driver with the -ignoreABI switch however are also present with the 280 driver without the switch though. IE, the video tearing and lag when more than one window is up, although not quite as bad. So were getting there.

I'm using Wheezy/Sid amd64.

At last I can see all window decorations, maximize/minimize/close buttons in bespin style, also checkboxes' flags are on their places too :)

The problem is not solved for me. If i upgrade xserver-xorg to the latest version in unstable the NVidia driver in both unstable (version 280.13.really.275.28-1) and in experimental (version 285.03-2) work without graphical glitches but everything in KDE (like windows animation, minimizing, maximizing, moving windows, etc.) is very slow.

I had that problem with 275.28 driver but switched to 280.13 from nvidia and that solved it but I still have xserver-* pinned to testing's versions.

Right, the problem is not solved, but its better than it was. The thread title is very misleading. The problem is with the new xserver being out of version with the NVIDIA driver. NVIDIA seems to be in no hurry to fix this, but it seems the Debian Multimedia guys have done a bit of tweaking and have released an updated beta driver in Experimental that some claim fixes all issues. In my case, it fixed nothing, but the unstable driver version at least allows you to start X without having to add the -ignoreABI switch to Xorg.conf. The screen lag and video tearing are still there though.

It is solved in the sense that pinning the versions of xserver to Testing fixed the problem or you can use the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau driver with poor 3d support but be able to use the latest xserver versions in Sid. None of the solutions that have come out work for me either but I'm glad some have found joy with them. The efforts the devs are making tell me that we are not forgotten.

So should we start a new thread specific to the nvidia driver issues with xserver?

That is up to you but this one has a lot of input on various attempts by Debian and nVidia to fix the problem. When the solution that solves my problem comes I will post it her and on a new thread. Unfortunately none of the solutions so far have helped me.

Xserver was upgraded to 2:1.11.1-1 in Testing today and it caused no trouble at all. I have nVidia installed using sgfxi, and I reinstalled it with driver version 280.13 (same as before) and it works fine.

So when loading up new windows there is no screen lag or freezing? What about video tearing if you drag windows around the screen?

Got tired of the constant lag, tearing and freezeups running this setup so I pinned back to the xserver in Squeeze since I lost the old xserver from Wheezy when I did the last upgrade. Now everything is running smooth and perfect again.

Must be something else in Sid causing the problem. What is going to be the big question. You can always get what you from snapshot.debian.org . Thank stevepusser for the link.

No, it works perfectly with no visible defects at all.

I also updated my Xserver to 2:1.11.1-1 and with Nvidia's beta drivers Gnome lagged like hell. Installed Nvidia 280.13 drivers and it doesn't lag as much anymore, but the problem is still there. But at least my desktop is now usable.

Update: installed Xserver 2:1.10.4-1~bpo60+1 from squeeze-backports and now my desktop is back to it's responsive self.

Right. So the problem is still not fixed when using the current unstable xserver.

Correct. I just install wheezy on a third partition to test this out. Installed nvidia 280.13 with sgfxi but that instal was sluggish so I installed 285.03 and that is better but you still notice the lag. With the free drivers everything was smooth but didn't test 3d. I will upgrade this install to Sid then come back two or three times a seek to update until the nvidia drivers and xserver start working right.

If someone needs the xserver-*-2-1.10 they can get from Squeeze back ports. Not sure of the full version number in backports.

Squeeze's xserver seems to be working just fine with the 280 drivers from Sid, but if I run into any issues I will grab from backports and upgrade/pin. Any chance you may be testing on KDE4.6.5 as I have been? Not sure if there are any major differences in how KDE handles compositing from GNOME.

With some embarrassment I have to revise my conclusion.

It worked fine with normal activities, but when I did something with a lot of graphics (e.g. using rawtherapee to process raw camera images) the system slowed to an unusable crawl. I've downgraded to the squeeze-backports versions of xserver-common and xserver-xorg-core (and it dragged in a couple of other backports packages) and everything is back to normal again.

Hi,
can anyone post the necessary downgrade commands (xserver 1.11->1.10)? xfce and gnome are unusable for me, slow as hell.

The command:

Code: Select all

apt-get install xserver-xorg-core=2:1.10.4-1~bpo60+1 xserver-common=2:1.10.4-1~bpo60+1
removes all other xserver-packages.

Code: Select all

apt-get install xserver-xorg-core=2:1.10.4-1~bpo60+1 xserver-common=2:1.10.4-1~bpo60+1 xserver*
returns a bunch of dependency-faults (.. depends on: xserver-xorg-core (>= 2:1.10.99.901) but 2:1.10.4-1~bpo60+1 is going to be installed...)
