I can't start x11 by startx command. Here is my /var/log/Xorg.0.log :

I have radeon HD graphic card. I have tested it both with xserver-xorg-video-radeon driver and xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd driver, both fails.

How to fix it?

please post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf - where the bug will most probably have its nest.

I've deleted it(I used the fglrx(ati) generated conf, but removed it when I uninstalled the driver).
So right now I have no xorg.conf and nothing in the xorg.conf.d dir.

You shouldn't need a xorg.conf file with the radeon driver.

First remove the radeonhd package (xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd). It's obsolete and isn't compatible with the Xorg version that you're using (1.12.1.902 -- which is the sid/wheezy version) anyway.
Code: Select all
aptitude purge xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd

Install/reinstall the xserver-xorg-video-ati & xserver-xorg-video-radeon packages
Code: Select all
aptitude reinstall xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon

Post the /var/log/Xorg.0.log again if you still have problems.

so there's where your problem lies. no xorg.conf, no X-screen. how would X know what you have in mind? a close look into
Code: Select all

for a start, here's the respective snippet from mine (without any warranty, this is just an example that most probably will not work on your system!)

But a month ago, I could open X with no conf file, and the default conf was good for me.
I'll try what you said however.

Thanks all, it works.
The current version of fglrx-glx and fglrx-driver don't work for me in the generated xorg.conf from aticonfig --initial .
So I don't use it right now, I'll wait for the new version that will may work.

You may be waiting forever...

Post output

Code: Select all
lspci | grep -i vga

If you're running Sid, Catalyst 12.6 is now available. If that doesn't work then it may be because your card/chip is no longer supported by AMD/ATI on xserver 1.12 (which you have installed).

I have radeon HD graphic card. I have tested it both with xserver-xorg-video-radeon driver and xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd driver, both fails.

How to fix it?

Here X relies on the "ati" module to decide which actual amd/ati driver to load. So for autodetection to work, you will need to install xserver-xorg-video-ati which will pull in 'mach64' and 'r128' drivers as well even though you won't be needing them.

If however you don't want to rely on autodection, you may forgo installation of xserver-xorg-video-ati, but will need an xorg.conf that explicitly states that you want to use 'radeon' driver:
Code: Select all
...
Section "Device"
    ...
    Driver "radeon"
    ...
EndSection

Sorry, I forgot to do this...

Then any help you receive is going to be limited...

Code: Select all
[   205.013] (WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:0@1:0:1) found

The problem is likely to be in the config file. Remove the config file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf), stop the x server then do

Code: Select all
# aticonfig --initial

And start up x again. If it still fails you need to post up the log file again, with the lspci output and contents of xorg.conf

Did it, the result I gave above is for that...

If fglrx doesn't work use the radeon driver which you have said does work.

I get this working only by:
Code: Select all
aptitude install xserver-xorg-core=2:1.11.4-1

Using Debian Snapshots.
Thanks all! Hope AMD will fix their bug.
