No display in secondary monitor [Urgent]

#1 Post by biolinguist »

I switched my lab computer to Debian 8, and it might have been a HUGE mistake!! But before I go down the distro-change way again, I wanted to try and fix the major problem if possible. The idea is if the following problem is fixable, I will learn to live with the unusable top panel behavior in Gnome Shell 3.14.

So I have two monitors attached to my setup. The main one works fine, but the second one is completely invisible to Debian! This desktop doesn't even have any fancy GPUs from AMD or NVIDIA that would lead to driver problems. Just the regular intel integrated chipset. So I am completely :? confused :? as to what the problem is. I tried configuring

Code: Select all

xrandr
, and got the following output:

Code: Select all

xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 1600 x 1200, maximum 1600 x 1200
default connected 1600x1200+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   1600x1200 0.0*
   1280x1024 0.0
   1280x960 0.0
   1024x768 0.0
   800x600 0.0
   640x480 0.0

are you sure there's no other gpu in there?
has it worked like this in other OSs?
describe the connections.
what if you switch monitors?

tbh, if xrandr doesn't even show the 2nd monitor, and you're 100% sure there's no other gpu, i don't know what to do.

you can troubleshoot:

Code: Select all

dmesg -w
then un- and replug the problematic device.

in case there might be a 2nd gpu after all, post

Code: Select all

lspci -k | grep -iEA5 'vga|3d|display'

has it worked like this in other OSs?
Yes! I dual-boot with Win 7, and both displays work fine!
describe the connections.
Standard display ports behind a Dell optiplex (skylake).
what if you switch monitors?
Very interesting observation! If you connect just one monitor, then both ports work with either monitor. However, if you connect both only one of the ports output. It's always the same port in this situation, and never both.

I have updated the bios, and installed all the non-free firmware!

I will post the outputs of the commands you asked for tomorrow.

For a Skylake system you need a newer kernel than ships with Jessie. Add the backports repository and install the latest kernel from there. Installing the package intel-microcode from backports may be useful as well.

Those who have lost data
...and those who have not lost data YET ”
Remember to BACKUP!

There is no second GPU, as can be seen from the following output.

Code: Select all

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Device 1912 (rev 06)
	Subsystem: Dell Device 06b9
00:14.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation Device a12f (rev 31)
	Subsystem: Dell Device 06b9
	Kernel driver in use: xhci_hcd
00:14.2 Signal processing controller: Intel Corporation Device a131 (rev 31)
--
00:16.3 Serial controller: Intel Corporation Device a13d (rev 31)
	Subsystem: Dell Device 06b9
	Kernel driver in use: serial
00:17.0 SATA controller: Intel Corporation Device a102 (rev 31)
	Subsystem: Dell Device 06b9
	Kernel driver in use: ahci
The entire output of dmesg, in case its useful, is pasted below. What I noticed, but I am not sure whether that's an issue, is the following bit:

Re: No display in secondary monitor [Urgent]

#6 Post by debiman »

well sunrat nailed it.

the default 3.16 kernel for debian jessie is starting to show its age.

you should backport to a newer kernel (i think the deafult backport kernel is still 4.9?).
kernel backporting => plenty of solved posts on this forum
backports => debian wiki.
