[SOLVED] USB Mouse stops randomly

Postby Dronar » 2013-06-13 11:43

Hi,

I have a USB mouse which randomly stop in Debian Jessie. It starts again if I disconnect and connect it again.
It can take a couple of hours or just a couple of minutes. The only thing I've been able to find is that it stops more often when I'm scrolling.

I have tried different mice with the same result. I recently migrated from Ubuntu where I did not have this problem so I doubt there is a hardware error.
I can see the syslog updating every time I connect the mouse but I can't see anything when it stops
Please tell me if there's any other information you need.

Thanks, but no they did not.

The first one regards something called laptop-mode which I don't have installed.
The second is about timeout for laptops on battery, mine is acting up even when the computer is not on batteries.

Which desktop are you running? And what kernel?

Code: Select all
$ uname -r

The thing that matters there is autosuspend. Have you tried disabling it? An IRC user has just solved a problem similar to yours by disabling autosuspend. Try with powertop, I think it has an option to disable it. And please try to be more specific about what you try and doesn't work.

Sorry I'll try to be more detailed.

I've checked the autosuspend settings on the usb device as listed in the second link you posted and they seemed fine.
I've now tried setting them to the same values as the post suggested but so far no luck :/

I have never used powertop before so I don't really know what to look for. I find the device under Device stats att 100.0% usage.
Under Tunables I find it listed as
Code: Select all
Bad           Autosuspend for USB device Comfort Mouse 6000 [Microsoft]

As this is a tool to optimize for power usage I guess it means that autosuspend is set to a "good" value?

(Don't mind the change in mouse name, I'm in a different office today than when I made the first post yesterday)

Well you're running a 3.2 kernel... I know 3.8 had some troubles with USB power management, not sure about 3.2... If the other suggestions don't work you might consider building 3.9

I've googled for a way to disable autosuspend since you may want to try. Here's the kernel documentation for further reference:
https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentatio ... gement.txt

And this is the command to disable it:
echo -1 >/sys/module/usbcore/parameters/autosuspend

This can be made permament by creating the file /etc/modprobe.d/disable-usb-autosuspend.conf with the content:
options usbcore autosuspend=-1

As I am on testing i recently got the update to kernel 3.9.
I'm not sure what has changed but I haven't had any problems since the update (2 days ago)

I hope I don't jinx it but I'll set this thread to SOLVED

Thank you all for your help

I have this exact same problem on one machine running Jessie (armf) 3.18.5 kernel. A simple and previously always reliable Microsoft mouse keeps disconnecting from USB. Or at least I get this same error, although the mouse seems to work nevertheless.
