Getting your soundcard to work, using Debian on non-i386 hardware, etc

[AMD/ATI] RV200 [Radeon 7500/7500 LE] and Jessie

After a dist-upgrade and then a fresh install of Testing, the TV function of my older ATI card has stopped. For several years Xawtv has worked great until earlier this year until I started receiving something similar to
Code: Select all
$ xawtv
This is xawtv-3.103, running on Linux/i686 (3.11-2-686-pae)
xinerama 0: 1280x1024+0+0
vid-open-auto: failed to open a capture device
vid-open: could not find a suitable videodev
no video grabber device available

Following the HowTo below has typically resulted in a functioning video card with TV capabilities.
https://wiki.debian.org/AtiHowTo
Starting this past June Xawtv stopped working again and by trial/error I found that I could get zapping TV to work with Xvideo if I set
/etc/modprobe.d/radeonkms.conf
Code: Select all
# default = 1
# options radeon modeset=1
options radeon modeset=0

But now with the fresh install, although the card is working well enough for just X, the TV function is not. From my limited knowledge/understanding of really what to look for, it appears that Xvideo has stopped working which is what Zapping had used.

This is on an AMD i386 box,
uname -a
Code: Select all

Re: [AMD/ATI] RV200 [Radeon 7500/7500 LE] and Jessie

Postby ramack » 2013-12-21 18:49

Part III

I have two drives with Jessie installed. The drive with Jessie I have install with a CD burned on 2013.05.07 (YMD) is the drive I have Zapping working. The most recent install, Zapping or any TV function does not work.

Any help would be appreciated since right now, I'm limited to upgrading beyond the installation from last May.

One thing that I have noticed is that
/etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf doesn't exist in the newest installation. So I tried adding nomodeset among kernel parameters without effect.

Do I need to install AMD's proprietary driver in order to regain use of the TV function?

UMS is not supported anymore by the recent DDX drivers, look here it was dropped 1.5 years ago:

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver ... 3e2e634b62

Of course also CONFIG_DRM_RADEON_UMS is disabled in recent Debian kernels ;).

So do I understand this correctly that this card no longer supported and the TV funtion no longer will work unless I downgrade and install the older working Jessie?

It is but partly, as you can see tuners are not implemented in KMS so AIW will not work, sorry

Of course you can downgrade to jessie where it worked or you can use wheezy.

Or you can compile your own kernel with UMS option enabled it is still there even in 3.13 kernel and of course ddx before that change, but all that is not supported anymore so things will break if not now somewhere in future for sure  .

Ok, thanks.

So since it's being obsoleted on the kernel level, then getting the card to work on another distro is slim to none as well?

Not exactly true :) if kernel in that XYZ distro has kernel with UMS config enabled + has ddx from this branch or lower:

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver ... log/?h=ums

And XYZ xserver dont complain about all that, then things will work ;).

But of course no modern distros will stay with oldish ddx of that kind, because there are no support for newer/newest cards ;).

Of course you can downgrade to jessie where it worked or you can use wheezy.

Thanks Smoki,
I would like to be able to keep this box as current as possible while having the TV tuner working. Any problems with downgrading to a working Testing, then hold the kernel and Xorg while letting the rest of the packages upgrade until a dependency issue occurs?
