Lockups occur after installation of firmware-linux-nonfree

#1 Post by Debian&Me »

Hi,

Since upgrading to Wheezy and installing the firmware-linux-nonfree package, I have a problem with my computer locking up. I sure can use some help since extensive googling has not.

The computer worked fine with Ubuntu Lucid 10-04. I decided to try Debian and installed wheezy 7.0. The install went well. The only problem is that 3D acceleration is not available on my ATI Radeon X300 GPU when using the default driver (xserver-xorg-video-ati). So -- I download the Mesa drivers (libgl1-mesa-dri) and firmware-linux-nonfree and install these without complication. I now have 3D acceleration, a Gnome3 desktop and all is right as rain! But then -- the computer locks up. The keyboard does not work (no response to keypresses, not even NUMLOCK or CAPSLOCK, nor REISUB and <CTRL><ALT><DEL>). No response from mouse. The screen continues to display the same image as when the lock up occurs; no distortion or artifacts. A hard reset by holding the ON-OFF button is my only recourse. Needless to say, all work is lost.

I have attempted to capture a log prior to and during the lockup. The Xorg.0.log, dmesg and syslog reveal nothing AFAICT. Another poster suggested ssh'ing with a second computer. This setup did not bear fruit because the ethernet connection fails at the time of lockup.

I have upgraded to wheezy 7.3 and am now running jessie. Still have the same issue. I found, quite accidentially, that setting the Option "RenderAccel" "False" in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/modules.conf has helped delay the lockups significantly.

My hope is to get a log of the lockup including error messages, so I can pass the information on to Debian developers. If anyone has any ideas, I am all ears. If you know a solution, I would like to hear about that too! Please find Xorg.0.log and dmesg attached below. Thanks in advance,

Re: Lockups occur after installation of firmware-linux-nonfr

#4 Post by Hralgmir »

I have a couple of old Dell CPx 's, 450 & 500. The 500 started doing this, after 30 minutes or an hour it would freeze. But I came to the conclusion it was probably a motherboard fault, as I was using the same HDD, and have put the 500 CPU in the 450 after upgrading the BIOS. I was thinking of putting together the old chassis and trying it with a BIOS upgrade sometime - perhaps if the BIOS had got corrupted it could cause a problem, something like that might be worth a try. However, before looking at hardware, I suggest putting the software back as it was before the problem occurred, and uninstalling the suspect packages.
syslog (also check syslog.1) would be recording up to the point of the lock up and saving the results, check the times and reference to the time the lock up occurs. Perhaps something would show in there. Another consideration might be whether you could swap the graphics card, if altering graphics settings makes a difference. Check the well known auction website for cheap second hand parts to try:). If you play around with this stuff I advise you to heed BIOS warning messages and do not try to override them if they occur.
It's possible it could be a software problem though.

I remembered subsequently I also once programmatically created this symptom (accidentally) by writing a faulty kernel driver module using kmalloc.
See here at the end of xorg
[ 24.165] (II) RADEON(0): VRAM usage limit set to 110332K
[ 47.739] (II) RADEON(0): Allocate new frame buffer 1152x864 stride 1152
[ 47.739] (II) RADEON(0): VRAM usage limit set to 111441K

VRAM, allocating new frame buffer? Sounds a bit like dynamic memory allocation to me. Could be worth grepping the source to see where the syslog messages are output from.
The kernel is sensitive about memory allocation errors, unlike userspace code which just fails with an error message. Of course if it is non free then it is beyond fixing if the source is not available. The kernel changes internally and breaks drivers sometimes, unless the driver writers keep their code up to date promptly.
I tried installing a non free graphics driver once but I never got it to work, actually it caused the boot sequence to fail before it got to the desktop and I had to undo it via rescue mode. It seemed to be mostly designed for Redhat distros but it could just have been my fault.
It might actually be easier to implement the graphics features you require by rewriting the open source driver instead. :)

Any news on this ?
I encounter the same problem : almost always when I logout from KDE session the system hangs as you describe (and sometimes during normal use, although seldomly).
It seems to be related to firmware-linux-nonfree package -- required only to enable KMS and enable proper resolution setting (otherwise I am locked to 1280x1024 pixels max).
I have double checked that removing this package stops hangs. I am not interested in 3D perfo.

As package has been installated quite a long time ago by now (almost one year), and it was working fine until last month, this seems to be related to kernel evolution.

I am thinking that this is a common issue with the firmware-linux-nonfree drivers.

I recently hacked together a Jessie installer for a (now old) PowerPC machine. Based on kernel 3.16-4. With an ATI 9200SE. I soon found out that GDM wouldn't load up and was getting a black screen. The log showing is it failed on lack of 3d acceleration.

So I spent too long trying to get a desktop up. I managed to install lightdm and LXDE. And got as far as a login screen. But then it failed again. Due to it still trying to use Gnome. ;-)

There were the usual messages of no "/dev/dri/card0" and falling back to software raster. Then it all changed. Through looking here on the net I was inspired to install firmware-linux-nonfree. For some reason it wasn't found at first and I had to play with the sources list so I could apt-get it. I then found I needed to use "video=radeonfb:off" in my boot args to enable KMS, DRM and DRI to work. And in the messages GLX and other features enabled.

But it wasn't to last and this is the point of my post. 3d still failed so Gnome still wouldn't load from the login screen but LXDE did work and also Mate after I installed it. I can use the desktop for a few minutes and then it freezes. In my case under five. Total lock up. One time the cursor still moved around so it looked like the system still worked. Only just.

Perhaps at this point a null modem cable to a terminal and debug mode enabled in the kernel if possible might catch it. :-)
