[SOLVED] Extreme trouble with iwlwifi firmware

#1 Post by adam1789 »

Hi guys,
I'm relatively new to debian wheezy (I just moved on from Mint) and I'm having some real trouble with getting my wireless to work. I've been scouring the forums for hours on end and I'm gonna start tearing my hair out soon.

From what I gather, it's a Intel Wifi Link 5100 AGN, and it requires the iwlwifi firmware.

When attempting to install debian earlier this morning, I was prompted to add non-free firmware to my bootable USB in order to install the wireless adapter's firmware.
Apparently, it needed the following firmware:

1. iwlwifi-5000-5.ucode
2. iwlwifi-5000-4.ucode
3. iwlwifi-5000-3.ucode
4. iwlwifi-5000-2.ucode
5. iwlwifi-5000-1.ucode

I managed to find the firmware for 5000-5, 5000-2, 5000-1, but not for 5000-3 and 5000-4. ? Where the hell are these missing bits of firmware ?

I hence went ahead and instaled debian with just the ethernet in hopes of ironing out this issue later on.y

However, I've still not managed to make any sense of how to get it working. I consulted https://wiki.debian.org/iwlwifi?action= ... -N_devices
but still, i can't get it to work.
An error message I get here is: "Your current backend does not support installing files".

Help; I'm completely lost. Could anyone please help a newbie out?
I don't understand how Linux mint could have got the wireless working so easily without the firmware being so easily available.

Running lspci gives:

Yes, it appears hard, but in fact is very easy.

Just go to: http://debgen.simplylinux.ch/
and insert your COUNTRY, Then select your RELEASE, ARCHITETURE, SOURCES, and Generate the Source List.
Copy that exactly to your installed sources list file, on your installed Debian Version.

With that done, just open Synaptic Package Manager, and then search for "firmware-".
firmware-iwlwifi
should be located. Just install it. Ot use the Command Line:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install firmware-iwlwifi
This package contains the binary firmware for Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG,
Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5100AGN/5300AGN/5350AGN, Centrino Wireless-N
100/105/130/135/1000/1030/2200/2230/6150, Centrino Advanced-N
6200/6205/6230/6235/6250 and Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 cards supported by
the iwlegacy/iwl3945 and iwlwifi/iwlagn drivers.

Contents:
* Intel Wireless 100 firmware, version 39.31.5.1 (iwlwifi-100-5.ucode)
* Intel Wireless 105 firmware, version 18.168.6.1 (iwlwifi-105-6.ucode)

* Intel Wireless 5100, 5300 and 5350 firmware, version 8.83.5.1 (iwlwifi-5000-5.ucode)
* Intel Wireless 5150 firmware, version 8.24.2.2 (iwlwifi-5150-2.ucode)
* Intel Wireless 6000 firmware, version 9.221.4.1 (iwlwifi-6000-4.ucode)

Awesome guide. Cheers mate. Didn't follow it literally because of a few hiccups along the way, but after a reboot it all works.
Thanks.
