Failure to Resume from Standby / Deb7 / Intel GRFX

#1 Post by aSystemOverload »

Hi,
I've recently put a new machine together:
Gigabyte GA-B85N Motherboard with Intel HD4600 Graphics / Intel Core i5 4440 CPU
OS: Debian GNU/Linux 7 (wheezy) / Linux msc001 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.60-1+deb7u3 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I've installed KDE and when I go standby everything seems ok, but when I resume the monitor does not respond (the power indicator is flashing so there is no signal being presented thru the HDMI cable). Note that the system is still running as I can Alt-F2 (quick task/find), select Terminal and enter sudo-reboot without the screen. So it is just the hdmi signal that is not being recreated/refreshed properly.

I've searched on Google/the Debian Forums and there is mention of disabling KMS and using various 'quirks'. But all of the examples/issues seem to be a little different, the monitor is on, but blank or the system freezes etc. Can anyone make some suggestions as to the best place to start please.

I've included the suspend log (/var/log/pm-suspend.log):

Re: Failure to Resume from Standby / Deb7 / Intel GRFX

#2 Post by josh321 »

EDIT: For anyone searching the internet for this, my conclusion is that the HD 4600 does not work with Debian 7, instead use Debian 8 (Testing).

I was about to tell you that the version of the intel driver included with Debian 7 does not support the HD 4600 (I also have this card and use Debian Testing because Debian 7 used to not support the HD 4600). I just checked https://tracker.debian.org and apparently they have backported the version in Testing to Stable. I suppose if you use this backports driver, suspending will work.

This baffles me as a while ago I spent much time trying to get Debian 7 to work with the HD 4600, but concluded that it was unreasonable because of a dependency on a newer version of libc. I eventually decided to wait for Debian 8 to come out and use Testing until then. You are more fortunate. I recommend installing the backports verision of xserver-xorg-video-intel to fix this issue.

Disabling KMS should not be needed with the correct driver.

I installed the backport

Code: Select all

apt-get install -t wheezy-backports xserver-xorg-video-intel
, but it still won't send a signal down the hdmi cable.
Nothing has changed. Any more ideas?

Could you post the output of:

Code: Select all

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -A 5 "LoadModule: \"intel\""
and

Code: Select all

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -A 8 "Driver for Intel(R)"
The HD 4600 should be listed in the second output. I am guessing you have re-enabled KMS as well. Just out of curiosity, this is a desktop right (I implied desktop because you mention a motherboard)? It's a bit strange because I thought the HD 4600 was only shipped in laptops.

With KDE you probably also want to make sure hardware accelerated graphics are working (OpenGL). If glxgears runs without errors you should have hardware acceleration. glxgears is in the package mesa-utils if I am not mistaken.

Sure, output below. Except for installing the backport, I've not made any other changes, including KMS related.
This is a hybrid system, is meant to be a Media Server/Centre, but also using as a KDE Desktop.

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -A 5 "LoadModule: \"intel\""

I completely forgot. I think a newer kernel then the default is needed too. When I first installed Debian Wheezy on my machine with an HD 4600, I did not get any graphics (only command line) until I installed the backports kernel.

However, I think the reason the backports driver offered was surprising to me was that I forgot it was offered. The thing is, I think a newer version of libgl1-mesa-dev is also required. There is no backport (probably because of the libc dependency). If upgrading you kernel does not help, then I think the only solution is to use Debian Testing (what I was originally going to suggest to you). This is the solution I use, and Debian Testing is pretty stable now. Debian 8 will probably be released around mid 2015. Although this seems far away, Debian Testing will freeze next month, probably only helping its stability.

Sorry :( I forgot the newer driver was offered. If you still intend to try to get Debian 7 to work despite harsh incompatibilities, you could take a look at this: https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/20 ... 01429.html It suggests needed packages. I only wasted a lot of time by trying to get it to work (not to mention a few reinstalls). I don't recommend this. If you need any help with upgrading to Debian Testing, please let me know. And remember to uninstall backports before upgrading to Testing.

Thanks

@debianxfce
The current stable distribution of Debian is version 7, codenamed wheezy. It was initially released as version 7.0 on May 4th, 2013 and its latest update, version 7.7, was released on October 18th, 2014.
The current testing distribution is jessie.

EDIT: It appears that the post I replied to was deleted.
Debian should write there, that when installing wheezy you will have 3 year old software
It is actually good that Debian uses old software. Many modern (and popular) operating systems do this. However windows has been changing to a quicker release cycle in the last few years. Newer does not necessarily mean better. Many of us want stability in our software as in knowing that it is not going to change and will continue to work.

In the case of hardware support, usually only the extremely popular operating systems receive drivers for the very latest hardware. The reason windows xp can support relatively new hardware despite being more than a decade old is that hardware vendors go out of there way to support it. This is because they think their sales will fall if they don't support even an old version of a popular operating system. The problem is not how old the software is, but the amount of support hardware vendors are willing to provide. When they provide drivers for GNU/Linux distributions, they simply take the latest version of all the core libraries and expect anyone who wants to use the hardware to use the very latest software. This is absurd, and we should definitely not blame Debian for not bowing down to the hardware vendors.
In your logic it is forbidden/stupid/whatever to use this free, newer and better os:
If you think that operating system is better, go ahead and use it. Many people who use Debian use it for ethical reasons. Others use it because it is much more stable than the majority of existing operating systems. And many use it because they think it is better. It is fine if you don't like it, but blaming it for not becoming a rolling release OS in order to support the latest hardware does not make sense.

Yeah, it is familiar to me that facts get deleted. This forum and its moderators are against latest technogy and installs, because they have no expirience of clean jessie or sid installs.

It does not help debian if people have no knowlege of these:

Your posts are repetitive, mostly incorrect and largely offtopic.
You have been previously warned about this but seem not to recognize what a lot of people have pointed out to you and continue to post the same over and over.
Give it a rest.
