usb devices not working immediately (HP Envy 17 n120nd)
usb devices not working immediately (HP Envy 17 n120nd)
I have problem with several usb devices plugged to laptop HP Envy 17 n120nd, new laptop with Skylake. Because of the Skylake I have Debian Testing installed (instead of Windows, hence no dual boot). The problem is as follows. When I plug an usb device such as memory stick, usb storage and wired mouse, none of them are detected, despite the fact that lights of these devices are on (except the mouse as I will explain later).
But when I reboot the laptop, while the usb devices stay plugged in the laptop, then they usually are detected (hence not always) and works without problem. Except the mouse: after completing the reboot the light of the mouse went off, indicating that there is no power. Replugging the mouse results in power for the mouse and it works like a charm too.
What can be the cause? And, maybe more important, what is the solution? I contacted HP, but they cannot help me because they give no support for Linux.

What desktop are you using?
Did this work with stable?
Did you take a look at the block devices in the terminal to see if the system actually saw them?

Re: usb devices not working immediately (HP Envy 17 n120nd)
I'm using laptop with Gnome 3. I couldn't test if this works with stable. I installed Debian Testing immediately and not Stable because of the new Skylake processor.

fdisk -l:
I don't see external usb devices plugged in the list. Or did I use wrong commando? I'm not very experienced with terminal commando's.

You could try to install the firmware-linux package.

Re: usb devices not working immediately (HP Envy 17 n120nd)
Those messages seem to be related to the display, which AFAIK is not your problem.canti wrote:dmesg | tail
Boot with your USB devices unplugged. Log in, open a terminal and type "dmesg -w".
This will show your kernel messages and stay waiting, so that you will see when new messages come in.
Now plug one of your USB devices (e.g. the mouse) and see if any new lines appear on the dmesg listing. If anything happens there, please post here the new lines.
Then do the same with e.g. a USB stick. Post here the messages that are appear.
If *nothing* appears on the dmesg listing then something very fishy is going on. But at least that'd be also useful information.
Re: usb devices not working immediately (HP Envy 17 n120nd)
Nothing appears on dmesg -w after plugging. What will be next step now?

Re: usb devices not working immediately (HP Envy 17 n120nd)
Check the BIOS/ EFI for anything that stands out. Newer motherboards tend to have an option named IOMMU disabled.

Re: usb devices not working immediately (HP Envy 17 n120nd)
I will check the BIOS. But I doubt if it will solve. Because it rarely happens that the usb devices work properly when plugged after (re)boot. Mostly not, but very sometimes yes. Hence it is not black/white. So if the BIOS settings might be the cause?
edit: just checked my BIOS: nothing with the name "IOMMU". Only "usb charging" which is enabled. But I don't think it is related to my problem.

Re: usb devices not working immediately (HP Envy 17 n120nd)
I think you may have to wait for kernel 4.5, that is supposed to have much improved Skylake support.
Just to note: lots of threads over at the Arch forums by Skylake users trying to get them working properly, I don't think it's quite there yet.

Re: usb devices not working immediately (HP Envy 17 n120nd)
Waiting for kernel 4.5, it is not even in Debian experimental. I hope it will arrives in time before the laptop guarantee expires. If the new kernel 4.5 does not work, then it is probably something with unreliable power supply for usb hub. How can I exclude the possibility of that latter and that it is definitely a kernel problem?

Re: usb devices not working immediately (HP Envy 17 n120nd)
Try a different power supply or remove the hub.
FWIW, Arch [testing] will have 4.5 within a day of the stable release and that distribution is designed from the ground up as a rolling release whereas Debian testing/unstable are development systems [1] and, as such, may have other issues ongoing in respect of general system integration that may confuse the picture.

Re: usb devices not working immediately (HP Envy 17 n120nd)
I have kernel 4.5 now in my Debian Testing. Unfortunately the problem remains unchanged: usb devices are not recognized, not even a wired mouse. Only after reboot with usb memory stick staying plugged during the reboot the usb devices come to alive. By the way, there is something changed with the installation of kernel 4.5: during boot I see a lot of red "failed" lines flying over the screen. It went too fast to read these lines. The boot itself is normal.Head_on_a_Stick wrote:I think you may have to wait for kernel 4.5, that is supposed to have much improved Skylake support.

I'm seriously concerned about my laptop. What can I do?

It seems that no failed item is given after command "systemctl --failed". Strange... There are red failed items shown during boot. At request of the terminal I created systemctl list-unit-files:
Do you see any anomaly here?
Code: Select all
familie@Envy:~$ systemctl --failed

To show all installed unit files use 'systemctl list-unit-files'.

Interesting. Very useful command! I post here only the first seconds of the boot process here:
There are indeed some failure, among others with " fuse". Has that anything with power supply? And other failures? I'm sorry, I'm a bit computer illiterate who loves Debian by his principles.
