Lost scroll wheel on basic dell mouse suddenly.[SOLVED]

#1 Post by noalternative »

This is an arm based raspberry pi 2, with debian based raspian. Raspian is just debian arm I think. I am reposting this from pi forums because I am not getting much feedback on it. https://is.gd/AHUegb

I have recently lost the ability to use the scroll wheel on my old dell mouse. Any ideas how to get it back? It is a non-optical dell mouse, ps/2 but attached to the usb with an adapter. It has been working for several months. The only thing that has changed recently was that I did a distrubution upgrade through apt-get. (updated) I am also trying to install a logitech webcam from my old dell and I wonder if that messed with xorg.

Here is my output from lsusb and dmesg

Raspbian is not just debian arm. The foundation releases their own kernel, firmware and other user space software. You can look for error messages in journalctl and syslog. Maybe some kernel update changed a crucial module or something like that. You might be able to diagnose the problem by thinking about what changes led to this no longer working

It wasn't mentioned in the OP, but was simple hardware failure ruled out?

That was the problem. I put the mouse on another computer and it did the same thing. Rather than throwing it I took a chance and cleaned it with rubbing alcohol, paying particular attention to the scroll wheel and now it works again. Thank you all for the input.

Rubbing alcohol usually contains methyl salicylate and often other ingredients. For cleaning electrical contacts, pure isopropanol is the best choice.

Rubbing alcohol is not a regulated term that I'm aware of, and can mean different things around the world........ or nothing at all. I've seen where people have had no idea what it is, when it's been mentioned online. Here in the US, it's just alcohol and water...... at least that's all my bottle indicates. Usually the 99% stuff is what is recommended for cleaning electronics but I can't find it anymore, locally. The best I could get was 90 something, but 70% is more common, and I even saw %50 at Walmart.....not sure what that's good for.
