Audio not working

#1 Post by Dr.MAle »

I bought a new laptop on the internet, from a site where you can configure a laptop choosing the hardware you prefer.

Everything is working fine with windows, and after some troubles, everything is working with debian but except the audio.

As far as I understand the soundcard is detected and the volume of alsamixer is at maximum but no suond comes out of the speakers.
(microphone on the other hand seems to work)

I tried with and without pulseaudio but nothing changes.

What can I do to understand what is wrong ?

Some useful information:

Debian GNU/Linux 8.5 (jessie)

Hi, it's okay, you're fixing it up pretty good it looks like. The sound thing is a real common issue, there are a lot of threads on here about it. Because it's so common, sometimes it's hard to easily find an answer that applies.

Usually when I have had a sound issue, I start with command "#alsactl init" or to be more precise these are the commands I think you should type in a terminal. The first and third you can do as a regular user, the second you have to be root.

Code: Select all

$ man alsactl
# alsactl init
$ speaker-test
Use q to exit from the man page, and ctrl-c to stop the speaker-test.

Here's what I get from speaker-test, I put it in code tags again to make it easier to read.

Code: Select all

$ speaker-test

speaker-test 1.0.28

Do you have firmware-intel-sound installed?
intel-microcode may be useful also.

I'm using KDE and pulseaudio with no alsa. To get the sound working, click on the speaker icon and unmute the speaker, set the volume level and check the sound with
System Settings > Multimedia > Audio Playback then choose the device and test. Look at the options available and if necessary try different options.

maybe also check dmesg for anything out of the ordinary like firmware issues, errors, etc.

Code: Select all

$ dmesg | grep firm
$ dmesg | grep erro
$ dmesg | grep sound

There is no such thing. Pretty much everything on Linux uses ALSA as backend. Pulseaudio, Jackd etc all run on top of ALSA which is the effective sound system.
ALSA consists of the kernel drivers (the effective hardware drivers) and some user space components. Kernel version is important with newer hardware because newer kernels have newer sound drivers. I had to upgrade my kernel on my desktop when i bought a newer mobo otherwise sound was working intermittently, pulseaudio was crashing etc.

One time when sound stopped working for me I purged both alsa and pulseaudio and reinstalled them. I hadn't done anything explicitly to them, but somehow they'd gotten messed up. A simple reinstall didn't work either, but a purge and install did. It's one of those 'worth a shot' things.

Code: Select all

su -c 'aptitude purge pulseaudio pulseaudio-utils pulseaudio-module-x11 alsa-base alsa-utils && aptitude install pulseaudio pulseaudio-utils pulseaudio-module-x11 alsa-base alsa-utils'
then reboot and see if the worth-a-shot worked.

After doing things got worser. After reboot I only see dummy output.
If I issue a alsactl init I can see all the channels back but the command returns this message:

xcb_connection_has_error() returned true
