Lagging wireless mouse & keyboard while downloading
Lagging wireless mouse & keyboard while downloading
Hello,
I'm running a Lenovo G410. I've recently upgraded to Debian 8.5.0 from Ubuntu 14.04. But, before that I upgraded to Ubuntu 16.04 and had the same problem. Whenever i try downloading something , be it through a web browser, torrent, or apt-get my wireless logitech mouse and keyboard start to lag. This problem persists until the download is finished. I've checked top and there doesn't really seem to be anything awry but I must admit I'm not exactly sure what it is I should be looking for *exactly*. I've also found a solution which does not work on my system here http://superuser.com/questions/528727/h ... ate#554343. Again , this does not fix the problem. At this point I'm at a loss since I can't find any other articles/posts which pertain to this specific problem. I hope someone will be able to help me troubleshoot this and fix the issue.
Thanks!

Re: Lagging wireless mouse and keyboard while downloading
Wireless mice and keyboards use batteries for power. They can slow down as the batteries age.
On my desktop I have returned to hardwired mouse and keyboard after several years with wireless. There is no lag, no wake-up time and I prefer typing on the traditional keyboard.

..and which type of connection do you use for downloading? Wireless?chaoticon wrote:..Whenever i try downloading something , be it through a web browser, torrent, or apt-get my wireless logitech mouse and keyboard start to lag...
What kind of "wireless" connection do your keyboard/mouse have? 2.4 GHz WiFi or Bluetooth?
Sounds like channel interference or resource sharing issue to me. Apart from answers to above questions, please also post the outputs of -
Code: Select all
lsmod
xinput
By the way, the superuser post you linked to deals with a slightly different problem - mouse lag 'anytime', not just at the time of downloading.
Re: Lagging wireless mouse and keyboard while downloading
Hello,
The I wondered about the batteries too and the problem persists even with fresh batteries. The mouse and keyboard are Logitech 2.4Ghz wireless. I use a wireless connection for internet. Here are the lsmod and xinput outputs :
lsmod:
xinput:
Should I run any of these commands during downloading?
Thanks!

No, these were just for observation, won't be any different during downloads. But do take a look at the outputs of -chaoticon wrote:Should I run any of these commands during downloading?

And for a test, could you try changing the channel in your router/access-point? For example, try setting it to channel 6 or 11 if it is currently set to channel 1 or 'auto' in the AP.
Re: Lagging wireless mouse and keyboard while downloading
Hello,
I think I see what you're trying to do here so I attempted to try downloading over ethernet and the problem still persists. Anyway, here are the results from trying to download an .iso using the bittorrent protocol (again, the protocol really doesn't matter since this happens even when downloading stuff via apt-get) over wifi. I'm unable to change the broadcasting channel as you asked as I don't have access to the router at this time.
Thanks!

Re: Lagging wireless mouse and keyboard while downloading
So that almost rules out the signal conflict problem (almost, because you didn't tell whether internal wifi/bluetooth were also turned off or not).chaoticon wrote:I think I see what you're trying to do here so I attempted to try downloading over ethernet and the problem still persists.
The link you posted in your first post also contains a few different approaches, at least one of whom seems interesting to me - the one related with acpi interrupts or the kworker bug : http://superuser.com/a/649715
Did you follow the link in that post and the advice in it too? I think it is easy enough to try, and revert back if doesn't seem to help.
In the meanwhile (before you try above), let's take a look at a few current parameter values -
Code: Select all
grep [[:alnum:]] /sys/module/{ath9k,{mac,cfg}80211,ideapad_laptop,drm,drm_kms_helper,rfkill,usbhid,psmouse,alx}/parameters/*
And some of the modules I'm interested in are not available in my ancient installation, so I'll need you to see their modinfo -
Code: Select all
modinfo evdev rfkill hid_generic alx usbcore usb_common
Re: Lagging wireless mouse and keyboard while downloading
Hello,
Good news, after trying the approach related with acpi interrupts or the kworker bug the problem was solved. It seems crazy that this bug is still there considering it has seemingly been around since Ubuntu 12.04. Thanks a million for helping me out and going through all of these troubleshooting steps with me. If there's anything else I can add to make this post more useful please let me know.
Thanks!

Congrats!
I'm certainly glad to have joined this thread, as it taught me something new too.
Sure. Mark your thread as [SOLVED] to indicate that it contains a possible solution to the problem mentioned in the thread title. To mark it, just edit your first post, and add "[SOLVED]" prefix to the subject line (which is thread title).chaoticon wrote:If there's anything else I can add to make this post more useful please let me know.

Well, for whatever reason it seems the problem really wasn't fixed. After following the steps in the article and rebooting the system it did seem like the problem was fixed but the same issue is still happening. I'm including output that was asked for in a previous post. I'm seriously considering going back to Ubuntu 14.04

Re: Lagging wireless mouse & keyboard while downloading
First of all, s/congrats/alas!/
Although I'm not sure if all the mice/keyboard mention their operating frequency on their stickers below. But it is always easy to revert back if things seem to go worse or ineffective.
Also, the 'drm' module in your system is showing a lot more parameters than those available in mine. I'd like to know what each of them does. Please show me -
And let's also take a look at :
How about resetting drm_kms_helper parameters to default (by deleting the conf file you might have created, or by commenting out the "options..." line in it), and trying the mousepoll option of the usbhid module instead ? As suggested in yet another answer on the same page we followed earlier : http://superuser.com/a/929755chaoticon wrote:Code: Select all
