LYNEC UA1 WiFi USB Adapter

Hey

I'm an I.T. Assistant for a public library. We recently ordered eight LYNEC UA1 WiFi USB Adapters from Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/LYNEC-UA1-150Mbp ... c+wifi+usb) for our writing computers which are located in a small activity room. The issue is the Linux drivers included on the disc are files which require me to use MAKE FILE and MAKE INSTALL. My issue is I need a driver for Debian that I can just drop onto the computer and install through Apper (KDE) or GDebi (Gnome). Is anybody able to help me out here? I have to help with the circulation desk where books are checked out and fix these computers at the same time, so sitting down and compiling files away from the Circ Desk is not an option for me. I prefer to use Debian on our writing PCs because this allows for the minimum requirements to write a document for FREE, using either LibreOffice or Google Docs running inside Firefox.

The Amazon page for that product states that:

Support Linux v3.0.0.4 System

Debian jessie runs Linux v3.16+ so the drivers should already be included in the kernel.

I downloaded the firmware onto a USB Flash Drive last night it was the firmware_rt_0.43all.deb file and I installed it last night, still the computer is not recognizing the device as a Network device.

That seems to be the rt2870 chipset, a search turns up http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions ... 0-148f7601

Just to be sure, run this command then check the ID again:

Perhaps you need a newer kernel version and https://packages.debian.org/jessie-back ... sc-nonfree as well.

The mt7601u driver is in the jessie-backports 4.7 kernel, the required firmware is in the firmware-misc-nonfree package in backports. It's confirmed to work for this user: https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php ... 1u#p396074

There's also a PPA with a safe dkms source deb package that will build automatically on the stock 3.16 kernel if headers, dkms, and compiler packages are installed, which aren't by default in Debian. http://ppa.launchpad.net/hanipouspilot/ ... 610u-dkms/

The easy way to set up the computer is build with dkms is to install dkms and module-assistant, then run with sysadmin rightsin a terminal:

It'll stop a couple times to ask (y/n), just reply (y).

MediaTek bought and absorbed Ralink, it seems. Do you have any Net access on any of those computers, such as wired? That makes things a lot easier. I think the backports kernel also needs other package upgrades from backports, making it more than just a couple debs that need installing. If I had to do it myself and had Net access, the backports kernel route is the one I'd take.

Right now I have the first Writer-PC setup to share it's Wi-Fi connection through an ethernet that connects to the second computer. Although my boss would prefer that I use the WiFi adapters she purchased on all four computers. Right now I'm formatting the fourth one, and fixing the Wi-Fi on the other two. The first one is the only one with Wi-Fi and that's because it had a wireless card already on the board.

OK, you should be able to upgrade the kernel and firmware on the ones with a connection to get their wifi working--hopefully you can switch the cable around to get them all connected for the upgrades.

Some driver packages also had a -source package I could have used to create a .deb package for the stock Jessie kernel, then you could have just installed that deb to get the wifi working for each one, but the PPA didn't have one. You could try the dkms package on one to create the mt7601u.ko file and install that in each computer, along with Jessie-backport's firmware-misc-nonfree, then run "depmod -ae" as sysadmin so the kernel will pick up the new driver file--though that's also a bit of work. A simple script to accomplish the installs and depmod command would speed things up. This would depend on all the computers having the same kernel and architecture. A .ko file only works for the kernel version it was compiled for.
