[Solved] Router not working properly with Linux / Android

#1 Post by toctoc33 »

Hi!

I'm using Jessie 8, everything up to date, I've noticed that I cannot load some websites like ebay, amazon, twitter, also, randomly I cannot upload photos.

I thought it was the browser but it happened in Cromium and Iceweasel, and also in my Android phone. I have an old PC at home using Windows that works fine. So I got to the conclusion it has to be the router affecting linux based OS.

If I connect to these sites using VPN everything goes ok, also if I use android with no wifi.

Most of these websites get me a blank page after 2 minutes of trying to connect, but amazon gives me this response: "www.amazon.es didn’t send any data. ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE"

I have seen in some forums to change the MTU size or to create a new chromium profile, but it doesn't work, also doesn't explain it happening with android.

The router firmare is up to date. I've got a Livebox HW version R02 connected to optic fiber, I have played with all the config options to no avail.

Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Thanks

It might give you a clue if you went through a diagnostic (broadband tweaker) with both the working setup and the non-working. There used to be several online that give you quite a lot of info about your connection. I haven't used them in years but one I remember was speedguide. It's really amazing what you can learn.

Thanks for your suggestion. I have tried and I get the same exact result for both setups:

« SpeedGuide.net TCP Analyzer Results »
Tested on: 2016.12.18 10:44
IP address: 37.235.xx.xxx
Client OS/browser: Linux (Chrome 55.0.2883.75)

TCP options string: 020405b40402080a0039c76a0000000001030307
MSS: 1460
MTU: 1500. MTU is fully optimized for broadband.
TCP Window: 29312 (NOT multiple of MSS)
RWIN Scaling: 7 bits (2^7=128)
Unscaled RWIN : 229
Recommended RWINs: 64240, 128480, 256960, 513920, 1027840
BDP limit (200ms): 1172kbps (147KBytes/s)
BDP limit (500ms): 469kbps (59KBytes/s)
MTU Discovery: ON
TTL: 46
Timestamps: ON
SACKs: ON
IP ToS: 00000000 (0)

The problem persists, I hope I will eventually find a solution! Thanks

I have just installed Kali linux in another PC and I get the same errors in those same websites. After checking the router config everything seems ok, nothing blocked or banned, just in case I reset it to default values but nothing, the problem persists.

The only way to access those websites is using a vpn, which is crazy, we are talking about twitter, ebay, amazon, very common sites. This is driving me crazy, how it can be so difficult?!

This is it, Google DNS. I have tried with default dns before this config and it was the same.

Code: Select all

# Generated by NetworkManager
nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 8.8.4.4

hmm, have you tried this?
It's pretty long, but some good info under "testing" and a link to a diagnostic of some kind.
https://developers.google.com/speed/pub ... docs/using

how about this? if you're using dnsmasq or bind, it might help https://duckduckgo.com/html/?q=debian+flush+dns

I have just tried with no changes. Also updated the wifi firmware just in case, but nothing.

I'm a bit confused by inconsistencies in your report.
In your first post you state,
toctoc33 wrote:I'm using Jessie 8, everything up to date, ...
later you state,
Also chromium and icewesel are updated.
and then you state,
Also updated the wifi firmware just in case...
How did you update firmware on an already "up to date" system?
How do you still have Icewesel(SIC) on an up to date Jessie install, it should be FirefoxESR?

What does

Code: Select all

cat /etc/debian_version
return?

Thanks for your answer, I didn't want to be inconsistent, I thought everything was up to date but later I realized it was a new firmware for the wifi so I updated it.

The result for the version command is:

Code: Select all

cat /etc/debian_version
8.6
But I think the problem must be elsewhere since my other laptop is running Kali linux 2016.2 release and is experimenting the same problem. This laptop is 32 bites instead of 64 of the other, different wifi card, different linux kernel and so on.

Thanks everyone, I think I finally got it.

The problem was in the OTN, the device that converts the information from the optic fiber to the router. The device has something wrong and my company only change it if you complain in their online forum, I formatted my other PC and moved to Kali and was about to change this one to a non Debian based OS (I was thinking of Manjaro) as some people reported problems in debian and ubuntu with maximum transmission unit (MTU) and after change it in all possible combinations nothing worked!

Just in case someone else is having the same trouble the OTN model is Alcatel-Lucent I-010G-U. They change it for model I-010G-P that should work ok.

Thanks everyone for their prompt answers.
