System crashes when commanded to suspend to ram

#1 Post by porkburrito »

Hello all, I've been searching for a solution to this all over the web and haven't been able to find a concrete solution to this problem I'm having. I haven't been a linux user for years, and just installed Debian 8 stable on my laptop, so I'm a little rusty as far as things go.

So everything installed flawlessly, and runs great. I don't have any issues with hardware when using the computer, didn't even have to tweak a thing! The only issue I've come across is that whenever i try to command the system to suspend to ram it completely crashes and shuts down. After which I have to hit the power button to turn it on and everything boots up like a normal cold reboot.

Supsend to hard disk works flawlessly. Not sure if it's a driver/kernel issue, or maybe bios. Was hoping you guys could help me figure it out.

Here is some system info:

I'm not sure what logs I need to look at for any evidence as to why this is happening.
Your help would be much appreciated!

You need to be specific about exactly what happens, and exactly how you're invoking suspend mode.

An overnight test of your RAM would also be worth doing.

You need to be specific about exactly what happens, and exactly how you're invoking suspend mode.

An overnight test of your RAM would also be worth doing.
I select 'Sleep' from the application launcher, it shows the lock screen for a split second then the display glitches out and the latop dies...like display is off, fans aren't on, not a peep coming from the laptop. I push the power button and it boots up, I login and then the Konquerer page recovery window pops up. That's it. This also happens when closing the lid, except of course I can't see whats happening on the display, but it has the same symptoms. Also wanted to mention, I have 4 GB of swap on a seperate partition to match my 4 GB of RAM.

Also just noticed the following on start up:

Code: Select all

/dev/sda8: clean, 111075/610800 files, 987102/2241216 blocks ^@[ 9.852628] [Hardware Error]: System Fatal error.

FYI, I took a video with my phone on startup, and hand typed that in, so there might be typos.

Never had an issue supsending laptop with windows 10.

Re: System crashes when commanded to suspend to ram

This could potentially be bad, as as far as I understand this is a machine check error. I think that MC4 in AMD is a error checking, see second to last page:

MCE can be caused by overclocking or excessive heat or just bad manufacturing.

There are many linux tools to read errors messages and create logs (for example mcelog). Apparently some systems automatically do this and print it to a place like /var/log/mcelog, you might look there. Or install one and manually print a log to see what the codes indicate
