Background:
- Can play anything with audio via vlc
- If I try to play a music track via Amarok or Clementine ("music player") there is no sound
- If I play something with vlc first then start the music player, the music player plays the track. I can close vlc and the music continues to play. I cannot press pause/stop or the music will cease to die
- If I try to start the music player first and then vlc, both vlc and the music player have no audio
- Running PulseAudio

I've largely avoided pulseaudio for alsa but tried to go native on this install so i start to get lost here. But here is some stuff that is additional
pacmd list
~/.asoundrc
obviously I can tell from the above that there is something about index: 1 I need to do
from this, I would guess
