Possible AMD Audio Issue re HDMI

#1 Post by milomak »

So a late 2015 iMac. Appreciate that sid also adds some complexity. So we don't quite have a typical wintel setup.

Background:
- Can play anything with audio via vlc
- If I try to play a music track via Amarok or Clementine ("music player") there is no sound
- If I play something with vlc first then start the music player, the music player plays the track. I can close vlc and the music continues to play. I cannot press pause/stop or the music will cease to die
- If I try to start the music player first and then vlc, both vlc and the music player have no audio
- Running PulseAudio

Some system stuff:

Code: Select all

00:1f.3 Audio device: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-H HD Audio (rev 31)
01:00.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Tonga HDMI Audio [Radeon R9 285/380]
This generates 2 PulseAudio Output Devices (pavucontrol says):

Code: Select all

Tonga HDMI Audio [Radeon R9 285/380] Digital Stero (HDMI)
Port: HDMI / DisplayPort (unplugged)

Code: Select all

Built-in Audio Analog Stero
Port: Speakers
Audio plays through Built-in in pavucontrol

I've largely avoided pulseaudio for alsa but tried to go native on this install so i start to get lost here. But here is some stuff that is additional
pacmd list
~/.asoundrc

obviously I can tell from the above that there is something about index: 1 I need to do

from this, I would guess

Code: Select all

pacmd set-card-profile 1 output:
and then choose from one of these?

Code: Select all

output:analog-stereo: Analog Stereo Output (priority 6000, available: unknown)
output:analog-stereo+input:analog-stereo: Analog Stereo Duplex (priority 6060, available: unknown)
output:iec958-stereo: Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output (priority 5500, available: unknown)
output:iec958-stereo+input:analog-stereo: Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output + Analog Stereo Input (priority 5560, available: unknown)
edit - when I go through my Bluetooth speaker all of this is not an issue

When JBL is selected no sound issues at all. I can mange the volume per app and all that good stuff.

But when the default Speakers Built in audio is selected often no sound goes through it

Is the JBL working on it's own PulseAudio profile or am I dealing with a case that the iMac hardware is not supported in the linux drivers?
