Install AMD GPU Drivers in Debian 9.

#1 Post by NeoFahrenheit »

Hi.

It seemes that Debian 9 was just got released and decided to give it another shot!
The installation process was normal, but, everythime I log in, there is this green screen with some strange colorized stripes for half a second that occours two times.

I tought that the GPU drivers needed to be installed. I have a HD 7770 GPU.
On my google research, I found this page: https://wiki.debian.org/ATIProprietary
It doens't have the instructions for Debian 9 yet, but tested the command

Code: Select all

aptitude update
anyway. The terminal said "aptitude: command not found" or something.

And was this page: https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-install- ... etch-linux
I've got to this part and tested

Code: Select all

apt update && apt upgrade
. The terminal said I don't have permission to acess some folders.

Then, I went to AMD drivers official website, selected my GPU and Linux x86_64 version. I've got a .zip file. Extract it and run the .run file that was in it by dragging and dropping it in the terminal and thereafter with chmod +x command, but it was only to made it extract itself again, not installing it. :(

Can you guys help me?
I'm using Debian 9 with Gnome..

This driver has been abadoned by AMD long long ago. Some people have luck building it on Debian 9. See http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=133494

For casual use, stick with the open source driver "radeon". Make sure you have non-free firmware installed.

Sure, but it would be better to start a thread so that it might be useful to others.
