USB 3 header not working. BIOS? or Hardware problem?

Postby wehn » 2017-09-26 13:14

I have an Asrock J3455-ITX motherboard, and just connected a pair of USB 3 ports using the USB 3 header.

Unfortunately those ports don't work. They have power, and produce dmesg output. But I can't mount any USB sticks on those ports.
All the USB 2 and 3 ports on the back panel work normally.

Any idea what is wrong? I did plenty of looking online but couldn't find many clues other than maybe a hardware fault. Or perhaps BIOS settings problem.

I am beginning to think this is a hardware problem.
USB sticks plugged in to ports on the header don't even show up in the boot menu in UEFI BIOS. But they show up fine when in the back panel...

Yes, it's hardware problem.

There is a small notice in the specifications it says:
- 2 x USB 2.0 Headers (Support 3 USB 2.0 ports) (Supports ESD Protection (ASRock Full Spike Protection))
- 1 x USB 3.1 Gen1 Header (Supports 2 USB 3.1 Gen1 ports) (Supports ESD Protection (ASRock Full Spike Protection))*

*USB3_0_1 is shared with USB_0_1.

I contacted ASRock:
Dear Customer,

Thank you for contacting ASRock.

*USB3_0_1 is shared with USB_0_1. " means that can't use the USB 2 and USB 3 header at the same time.

Best Regards,

ASRock TSD

So I unplugged the USB 2 header, and voila, the USB 3 header works. It's a weird limitation. But at least there's another one port USB 2 header so I get one front USB 2 port working.
