video problems upgrading wheesy to jessie

#1 Post by pappin »

Hello all,

I haven't found anything searching that quite matches my problem.
I'm not an expert so please bear with me.

When i upgraded from wheezy to jessie all went well apart from my display its like the wrong driver is installed.

My sources for the upgrade were;
deb http://ftp.at.debian.org/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ jessie-updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main
deb http://ftp.at.debian.org/debian jessie-backports main non-free

From the initial grub boot screen where the fonts are large thru to the xfce4 desktop where the fonts are barely readable.

The display was fine in wheezy and lspci reports my video as an AMD/ATI ES1000 rev 02.
I have read there can be problems with this controller but When I do a fresh install to a clean
disk the display is fine so its only if i perform an upgrade that things seem to go wrong.

I've tried removing, purging and reinstalling xserver and xfce4 but the problem remains and I
don't have an x11.conf

I'm kinda lost now it seems odd that a clean install works but an upgrade doesn't so i'm
guessing somethings lying around somewhere from wheezy

Anything else I could be trying ?

Thanks very much

i will take your word for it.
upgrading from wheezy to jessie in 2018 - hard to believe it went well.

anyhow, please post the output of:

Code: Select all

lspci -k | grep -iEA5 'vga|3d|display'
uname -rv
do you remember if you were using the proprietary driver before?
