HP DAT72 tape drive

I have a DAT72 tape drive and the manual for it says it can "read/write" dds3 tapes. the drive shows up in lshw :
Code: Select all
219-              *-usb
220-                   description: Mass storage device
221-                   product: DAT72 USB Tape
222-                   vendor: Hewlett Packard
223-                   physical id: 2
224-                   bus info: usb@1:2
225-                   logical name: scsi2
226-                   version: 30.30
227-                   serial: 4D58500940413455
228-                   capabilities: usb-2.00 scsi emulated
229-                   configuration: driver=usb-storage maxpower=2mA speed=480Mbit/s

however any DDS3 tape inserted ejects after ~5 secconds. i dont think it needs a firmware update (paid)

the "clean" light is on, would this cause an eject? I dont currently have a cleaning tape.

thank you in advance for any ideas or advice :)
