Intermittent sound

#1 Post by ckosloff »

Sound in my computer goes off at random.
I checked cable connectivity to external speakers and it is tight.
Sometimes restarting the computer fixes the issue but not this time.
I checked pavucontrol and everything enabled.
Only solution I can think of is testing an acceptable quality sound card and bypassing the one in the motherboard.
I am not in the mood of spending money I don’t have.
Could somebody post commands needed to test the sound card?
Command speaker-test: cannot hear anything from the sound it is generating.
Reinstalled pulse audio and its working again, don't know for how long.

You don't say anything about your system or Debian version.
There is an issue with pulseaudio in Sid currently so it's wise to wait before doing full-upgrade, until it proposes no major removals.

Thanks for response
I am using testing a dist-upgrade might have messed up the system.
Anyway until today it is still stable.
Can hear sound from speaker-test command.
I used apt-autoremove following suggestions from apt, that is the probable cause of the error.

I did a d-u a couple of days ago which removed a couple of pulse packages. Still had sound but pavucontrol wasn't working. I just restored the backup (which I always make before doing d-u) and did a simple upgrade instead so no packages were removed.
Currently waiting to make sure no vital packages are removed before doing dist-upgrade.
PS: I never use autoremove! Sometimes look at what it suggests and remove packages individually.

Lost sound again but re-installing pulse brought it back, there is definitely an issue there.
