maybe nothing!

I miss the days when all this functionality was built into the controllers bios. I would have thought 2 decades ago all the smart info, formatting, provisioning, and the like would be available with a <Ctrl><S> after the post screen, or something... I miss grown sectors.

I use badblocks to stress test new hard disk drives. Here's an (old) article that describes the process:

in the world. That some should be rich shows that others may become
rich, and hence is just encouragement to industry and enterprise.”

i use it instead of wipe or scrub

install it and ( strike that ) read the man - it's now part of the e2fsprogs package

with the -svwt options it can show and sometimes even fix harddisk errors.
If the disks platter is damaged beyond badblocks ability to fix error(s) the location of disk errors can be seen and worked around.

warning the -w option is write mode which is described as destructive mode - meaning it overwrites the area of the disk (partition or drive) it is pointed at.

The old man - page used to warn: "If you think you are smarter than badblocks you are not." LOL
In memory of Ian Ashley Murdock (1973 - 2015) founder of the Debian project.
