Suspend not working ASUS X542BA VivoBook

#1 Post by namelesske »

Dear all!

I would like to ask some help diagnosing and fixing the suspend on my machine under Debian buster. I read the SystemD manuals but I failed to solve the issue.

So with kernel 4.15-4.18 the suspend is working under Ubuntu bionic, with 5.0 and above there is a freeze after resume, the tty sometimes works, but the KDE Plasma lock screen is not responding just black screen with a cursor and some time later complete freeze. Someone could explain me what changed in the never kernels?

I decided to switch to Debian Buster, and there is still a problem with suspend and shutdown/reboot. Mainly the machine goes to sleep, the screen turns off the leds are indicating the machine is still on, but not able to wake up anymore. The same happens with shutdown, sometimes it's working sometimes just halting the system without power off.

I don't want to use custom kernels, because of security reasons. I want to learn how to diagnose and fix, but I don't know witch logs or information need to look first, or where I should began. I don't think this is a serious bug just something works different compared to Ubuntu older kernels.

There are also minor problems with amdgpu but it's not that high priority for now...

HW

ASUS X52BA Notebook
AMD A9 9240 CPU
AMD Radeon R5 GPU
12Gb DDR4 memory
250GB TR200 TOSHIBA SSD

Not sure will be able to help much directly myself but suggest installing inxi and showing what #inxi -GSC command gives.
That is one of commonest requests from our more experienced users and unusually for a new member you have received no response thus far.
Are you using default Gnome, which is the most demanding desktop ? I would try a lightweight desktop to start on a notebook, the beast that is systemd/Gnome/XWayland might behave better. Feel free to ignore these low level requests.
