AMDGPU Driver Not Working

Postby Titan91 » 2019-08-22 23:28

I'm wanting to use the open source AMDGPU driver built in to my Debian Stretch based OS. I installed an MSI RX 550 which works out of the box but the AMDGPU driver does not appear to be working. Cinnamon does not work (crashes on boot) and my screen resolution is stuck at 1024x768. I have tried the below:

Code: Select all
~$ sudo apt install firmware-linux firmware-linux-nonfree libdrm-amdgpu1 xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu is already the newest version (1.2.0-1+b1).
libdrm-amdgpu1 is already the newest version (2.4.95-1~bpo9+1).
firmware-linux is already the newest version (20190114-1~bpo9+2).
firmware-linux-nonfree is already the newest version (20190114-1~bpo9+2).
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 5 not upgraded.

Code: Select all
~$ dmesg | grep -E 'drm|radeon' | grep -iE 'firmware|microcode'
~$

Code: Select all
~$ lsmod

Please install inxi and give us the output of
Code: Select all
inxi -Gxx

So we can see your graphic hardware and drivers in a much shorter and clearer format.

I think that card's too new for stretch, try buster instead.

Hold on a minute: what does "Debian Stretch based OS" mean, exactly? What are you tryin' to pull?

I agree. I switched to an Ubuntu 18.04 base which resolved the issue. My assumption is the latest kernel available for Debian Stretch in the backports and experimental sources is just too old. I was never able to get a newer kernel than what I could find installed. Kernel 4.15 worked with Vulkan out of the box from the stock Ubuntu repositories. Thanks.

Not the case. Debian has kernel 4.19 in stretch-backports. You probably would have needed to update the Mesa packages from backports, too--they are equally important in supporting newer hardware.
