If you're running Buster, the only line you need is:
Code: Select all
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ buster main contrib non-free

Comment out the rest.

You forgot the security ones. The 2 I mentioned should go, and the deb-src ones are not needed unless you want to compile software.

I'm trying to keep it simple for the OP.

'Tis a poor choice to sacrifice security for simplicity.

Not at all Steve. I wasn't trying to suggest that to make the system simpler, but to keep it simpler for the OP to understand.

They really should have those security repos enabled, even if it is harder to copy and paste three lines instead of two.

The OP also asked how to install the non-free Nvidia drivers. This gets asked many times a week, and the answer remains the same: follow the guide in the Debian wiki--like it is for so many questions here.

The wiki does not even include Debian 10. [To this date Sept 7, 2019]

AND IT SAYS NOTHING ABOUT NVIDIA 304 CAN'T WORK WITH DEBIAN 10.

And stuttering Nouveau (this date) isn't even working either.

DO NOT release tier upgrade to Debian 10 buster on your main systems where Nvidia 304 is desired.

Let me be clear:

Debian (10) just allowed numerous computers with legacy nvidia GPU's to fail BEFORE their time.

Because Nvidia stopped support and refuses to go open.

However; so what? Why HELP Nvidia obsolete them? Why should we also stop supporting GPU's that are working?

Either work with the last proprietary driver or fix open Nouveau. Either way you can't cut stuff off just because Nvidia does.

AND ALSO FAIL TO WARN PEOPLE.

If it's all important that xorg move away (not held back) from nvidia "legacy" cards then they also need a fork that doesn't.

And the new Wayland tests, ideas, and future is great; but so far limits what apps you can use with it. So we are still xorg or die until then.

Are we putting the cart before the horse (and blaming the BS in the road)?

I remember reading somewhere (not in this forum) that 3.04 was not going to be supported in buster (might have been in the installer since although I was running 390 I sill had 304 installed). I had an old Nvidia card that ran on legacy-304.xx in Jessie. It also ran on legacy 340.xx on stretch and legacy-390.xx in buster. Have you tried the legacy-390.xx or one of the other legacy drivers with your card in buster?

Sorry for the side track OP...

For a desktop, how much will it cost to get a video card that will work with the drivers in Buster and is much better than that ancient one? It can't be that much...

I got Nouveau working link above. But then nouveau was far to unstable. More at link above.

If Nouveau works well over time then great. It just hasn't been even as good; historically. Tested as poor.
